I'm having similar problems with one of my 1000W combo units. It started out not wanting to kick on when the timer switched on during HPS setting. However if you bump the ballast unit it kicked on.The bulb is pretty new so I switched bulbs to MH to see if it would function like its supposed to on this setting.Even though the MH bulb needed to be replaced it still came on as it should. At that point I figured I had a defective "igniter" necesary for HPS bulbs. Here's where it gets crazy.Luckily I decided to run it on and off for a few days to watch it.Well it started putting off a odd smell.( what smell at this time wouldnt be strange?)Well within 2 days I was "lucky" to catch it as the power cord melted and went up in smoke. It destroyed the powercord, the plastic fitting you push the cord into, and wires connecting on the other side.Had I not been there your quess is as good as mine as to what would have happened. So,,,It looks like my only recourse is to find some electrical repair place to trouble shoot it and repair it.None of the parts that go into these things is especially expensive, but without professional help I'd be more than a little parinoid about turning my back on it. I quess what I'm getting at is be careful troubleshooting anything electric. What starts out looking like a simple thing can sneak up and bite you in the ass.-SMOKEJAGUAR
