First time grower

Ive got some fluorescent lights already but looking on the net everyone says they just dont cut it, that HID or MH etc. is teh way to go. i know NOTHING and as long as it doesnt turn out to be total crap I dont wanna be shelling out hundereds of pounds for extra lights. Im a cheap bastard. Also i dotn have a lot of height, as im in eaves of the roof... Ive heard people grow sideways, or what about lighting from the side, because i dont wanna burn my plants. And what sort of tempreture am i looking at having? any answears to any question will be much appreciated... Thanks
