The government of the PRC say that they have continuosly has excersized sovereinty over Tibet. It has never been an independant state. The Tibet government in exile says says in 1949 when PRC invaded them they were an independant state.

i was reading "The Tibet-China Conflict History and Polemics" by Elliot Sperling which explains history of both sides.
In the 57th & 58th year of Qialong Period 1792-1793,,,China's sovereignty over Tibet was firmly established and Tibet was reduced to a vassel state of China's,
With Scientific Socialism coming in at the end of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911...and in 1903 British Viceroy to India Lord Curzon were protecting the British interests in India and sided with China and threat extended to Russia with its Central Asian interests and a threat from Qing was unimaginable.

SOOO to block Russia's design on inner Asia, British became a party to several agreements and treaties to acknowledge Tibets subordination to China. Fuckin' Brits AGAIN!

The Chinese aided Tibet in the Tibeto-Napalese War 1792-94.

So helpless were the Tibetens then. China sent 50,000 troops to help according to the Gurkhas. Tibet then was placed under the soveriengnty of China. The British continued to pay lip service to the notion that China has rights to a sort of "suzeraintry" over Tibet, but the very vagueness of that term left it undefined and unspecified.
In recent years Bejing has promoted economic development and migration of ethnic Han Chinese to Tibet and rapid economic growth has fueled resentment of the Chinese. The Tibetens are afraid of losing their culture and everything that has meaning in life for them. It is going to be lost in the next generation. As children become "sinified"[to become Chinese]....and that creates tensions in Tibet.

The current British PM says that PRC Premier Wen Jiabo has told him that he is WILLING to talk to the Dalai Lama now.

He sure slammed old Pelosi though.

As far as the Mayans though.... today there are 6 million of them north of Peru and mostly in Mexico. Guatemala, Peru, Belize, Equador and Elsalvador has some. 31 groups of them in Central America.

I saw Tulum the Mayan ruins in Mexico on my Carribean cruise and it was a great thrill to walk around the ruins on the beautiful waterfront.
In spite of intermarraige and Spanish immigrants many Mayan communities have been able to preserve their way...except most are Christian now except for the fragile Lacandon of the Chiapas rainforest have never been "Christianized" and still practice ancient Mayan religion, but TRAVELERS AND TOURISTS are ruining their way of life. As well as ancient sites are being exposed to looters among rhe tourists.

Some ethnologists doubt that the Mayan culture will last with the onslaught of the modern world. The Mayan Calender survives and some Shaman-preists are still around. The largest expansion of the rainforest is in Guatemala and being felled at an alarming rate for corn fields. 88-92 1,130 acres alone felled. In 1990 Guatemala set aside 40% as The Maya Biosphere Reserve as wildlife is vanishing also.

SOOOOO PROGRESS and Greed is killing off ancient cultures and not much will be done to stop it. "Soylent Green" seems to be really true someday.

Actually....my own culture is disappearing. Thankfully I have Torog, Hog, Brocky, to remind me from where I have come. A dying culture also. Damn carpetbaggers!!!!
