I don't know wtf these regulars are going on about in respect to HOG. But as regards to:

lol, the words of the classic internet n00b. As one who mod'ed BBSes back in the 1980s and web forums in the 1990s, I can tell you a different story from personal experience.
Trolls can easily take over a board by typing things like f.u. to the regulars. Oh yeah, you'll say f.u. right back, I'm sure, but that feeds their special hunger for hatred, and they will come back every day, week, month, and year, under a variety of aliases. Think again sweetheart, some people dig hate quite as much as others crave love.
The TROLL capacity for hate far outweighs whatever wit or resourcefulness you (or anyone else) think you have. There are plenty of hardcore trolls who will talk about skull-f*cking your mother day in and day out, and once they get interested in a board they stay interested. Flame wars can easily destroy a forum, because normal people like me do not stick around once the flame wars start in earnest. I have better things to do w/ my time then feed trolls. I would just find another forum where there is a good mod, like DEL.
Pardon me ma'am but you are showing naivety in saying you don't need a mod at all, that you can somehow run things by the democratic process. Give me a mod-monarchy any day over this town hall stuff. For one thing there is no system in place to support democratic modding on a forum. So you're asking the mod to be some sort of vote counter, which is way too much work. Let me ask you one question, how much money have you personally paid DEL recently? I think zero is probably close to the mark.
By the way, flaming a good mod is a good way to lose a mod. I stepped away from modding a forum for this sort of flak, and the forum went to the dogs, people began making threats against other peoples lives and calling them up on the phone, stalking them and crap like that.
Eventually what happens is the police are forced to get involved and requisition IP logs to determine the true identities of those making objectionable threats. Now in the course of doing so on THIS site they might be tempted to open several other investigations of a somewhat tangential nature.
So god save the king! chrissakes if you've been using the internet for over 5 years you should know better than to say we don't need a mod.
