"you can't sell copies of it for profit" so the difference is, with physical things like a CD or book, there is only one copy. so you can sell it for a profit, but only that item because there is only one. so in a sense you own the license to it, then you sell the license.way but with data, you retain it even if you're giving a copy away... the photocopy in a library metaphor almost works.. that would be more like being only able to share parts of the song, pieces.
