I'm sorry, AG.  I was caught up in the times this song was written.  The
Cajuns (coonasses) I've known don't claim the creole culture. While the
distinctions have blurred over time, the "jambalay, crawfish pie,
filé gumbo" culture of "da bayou" has never had anything
to do with the "muffaletta" culture of the Mississippi delta.
The music is different, the food is different, the origins of the people
are different and the patois is different.

And yes, they happily play the song in New Orleans; I'd guess because
it's bot fun and popular.
