i think the reluctance to prescribe narcotics has more to do with the puritan streak in our society that condemns 'non-medical' narcotic use as criminal...when someone gets a pain scrip, the docs/pharmacists get suspicious when they show up for a refill...my very ill mother had a hell of a time getting morphine when she was in constant pain, but it wasn't a problem when she only needed it on an occasional basis
ever see a COPS show where junkies wrap themselves in toilet paper and set it on fire to burn themselves enough to get pain meds? the docs scorn them and deny them any pain relief even though they're going through painful withdrawl symptoms with fresh blisters on their torso...nice bedside manner!
