What sort of light do you need for growing weed?

Some people say to use red lights, others say blue, some even say purple. I ain't got no clue on this and I'm tryin' to learn as much as possible. Are you able to use different types of lights or does it depend on the type of dope plants your growing? I also heard that you can make use of sunlight to grow the weed and that the plants need darkness to. If so, does this not work in the winter, or is daylight just as good? Peace - Sam
