Another ?, how to check humidity

I think it may be too dry where I'm growing(air conditioning). How do you check humidity level,with a barometer or something? And if it's too dry if I put some containers of water around will they add moisture to the air? I don't want to spend $ on a humidifier or anything. Thanks
