Hey Red, I did it the cheap way once by finding some local topsoil. Collect more than you need. Break up the large chunks, remove all the debris, and get it pretty clean. Then add 2 gallons {by volume} of perlite for every 5gal bucket. Mix well. Its a lot of work if its more than a couple buckets full.
I see pallets of bags of lawn and garden supplies at almost every large grocery, hardware, and home improvement store. Some of those must be top, or potting soil. Read the fine print on them. You dont want anything with fertilizers added in.
Most will not have perlite added in either, so you still need to mix some in for good drainage.
Hyponex potting soil is what i use in small amounts for seedlings or cloning sometimes. Its nothing special. Thats whats around here locally, and it has no ferts mixed in.
Never used any, but lots of top soil growers say that Fox Farms-Ocean Forest Mix is the best there is. I'm sure its expensive, and i think its mostly sold at grow equipment and supply stores, or "hydro stores"
