Yes, I used a water bong (I never do joints anymore, too harsh and too wasteful of the precious herb). However the water bong created a harsh smoke. Really the water doesn't filter that much, let's not fool ourselves. It may cool the smoke down a little bit but that's about it. The main reason I use a water bong is it gives more control over the inhalation process by slowing it down.
I also tried my spanking new vaporizer, a KiaVaporizer, which is pretty awesome. It only ran me about a hundred bucks or so, not bad at all. The vaporizer obviously is much less harsh, no matter what you inhale. With mj, I vape first, collect the remains, and then water bong them at a later time. This stretches my marijuana dollars. Of course, it also defeats the purpose of a vaporizer, but in the future I do plan on creating cannabutter with the vaped remains.
The main goal is to maximize THC absorption and minimize waste. With a joint, THC is literally burning into thin air. With a bong, less is wasted, but still some smoke escapes, either through incineration (outright burning) or drifting away. With a vaporizer, theoretically you aren't wasting any material. Though I have found that if you leave herb in a vaporizer long enough, it will combust. So you have to take it out after a couple puffs, when it turns brown and looks really dry. Otherwise you're using the vaporizer merely as a glorified bong, defeating the health angle.
