Rule of two thumbs always have a spare bulb.
replace it with a new bulb.
Note the tit in the middle of the mogel is it burnt, is it weak. That usualy is if if the bulb is replaced . check it to see if it has pressure when pushed WITH THE DAMN THING UNPLUGED. EVEN THEN USE A WOOD STICK THATS DRY. YOU CAN GET KNOCKED ON YOU ASS FROM THE CAP IN THE CIRCUIT.

Note bulbs are dark suckers thats why they turn black when they go out.... Full of dark.
Stand up if joke goes over your head,,,,,,
Remember a nice firm tit is a mans best friend.

the other day my MH would not come on either....I tapped on it from the side and moved the fixture around a bit and it kicked on!
I know it sounds bootleg but it really worked and now it kicks on fine every time.....hmm
Also try taking your bulb completely out and reseating it as tightly as possible for good contact.

peace

"WITH THE DAMN THING UNPLUGED. EVEN THEN USE A WOOD STICK THATS DRY. YOU CAN GET KNOCKED ON YOU ASS FROM THE CAP IN THE CIRCUIT. "

What SanClem is referring to is the capacitor in the ballast. Just because the light is unplugged does not mean it is not 'hot'! To build up enough power to ignite a HID bulb, the system first charges a capacitor which is similar to a battery but works on a different principle. It has a long, coiled, flat, thin piece of metal inside that builds up an electrical charge on one side and when it is full, discharges it all at once in a big zap. Don't get on the wrong side of that zap!

I'm having similar problems with one of my 1000W combo units. It started out not wanting to kick on when the timer switched on during HPS setting. However if you bump the ballast unit it kicked on.The bulb is pretty new so I switched bulbs to MH to see if it would function like its supposed to on this setting.Even though the MH bulb needed to be replaced it still came on as it should. At that point I figured I had a defective "igniter" necesary for HPS bulbs.
Here's where it gets crazy.Luckily I decided to run it on and off for a few days to watch it.Well it started putting off a odd smell.( what smell at this time wouldnt be strange?)Well within 2 days I was "lucky" to catch it as the power cord melted and went up in smoke. It destroyed the powercord, the plastic fitting you push the cord into, and wires connecting on the other side.Had I not been there your quess is as good as mine as to what would have happened. So,,,It looks like my only recourse is to find some electrical repair place to trouble shoot it and repair it.None of the parts that go into these things is especially expensive, but without professional help I'd be more than a little parinoid about turning my back on it.
I quess what I'm getting at is be careful troubleshooting anything electric. What starts out looking like a simple thing can sneak up and bite you in the ass.-SMOKEJAGUAR

i had a similar problem with a MH. burned up a breaker inside the ballast. replaced the inline fuse inside the box, but not until i replaced the bulb did the problem go away. so like sanclem said, check the bulb first

Well it cost me $110.00, but at least I had it looked at by someone who should know.Turned out powercord and where it connected were smelted due to arching. So replaced with new "locking" powercord setup. No arching due to bad fit.Everything else works fine.-SMOKEJAGUAR
