yer sounds like a nice space ...is that 3.5ft wide, 5ft long,10 ft hi ? or 3.5ft wide ,10ft long and 5ft hi?
i no you sed i would prefer soil but why would you ? soils dirty .it has bugs in it ,it gets everywhere , and after watering it loads the surface packs down so less oxygen gets
in...its up to you hydroponics costs slightly more and the apparatus is more but you dont get any many problems when your in control ...unlike soil !
you can set up a hydroponic set up with no problem and have it automatic so you dont have to water it every day ..bonus : )
the light size required for that space is between 4/600 watt
coz the grow area will be smaller coz you need space to work/move around in section off like 2 foot to move in giving you pritty much "3.5 x 3.5 ft" thats a 400 watt light if you want super quality weed get a 600 but a 400 will do .
you will want to give 1 plant, 1 square foot (30cm x 30cm ) so in that space you can grow 9 happily !and 9 plants under a 4/600 will be very nice indeed !
as you grew it in the 70's lol did you actually grow it or did you put some seeds in the garden and let it grow for itself? coz you need to tend to them a little more if there inside more if they are in soil!

to set up your grow room you start at the begining .....
AIR FLOW.....
1) firstly you need some "grow fans" thease are excellent fans that can be soundproofed with wodding

2)now you need a 4" carbon filer (removes the smell of weed in the flowering stage )get some duct tape too

link the carbon filter to a bit of ducting (with duct tape) and hang the carbon filter up from the ceiling ..if you can if you cant reach suspend it from a wall with some shelf brackets link the other end of the ducting to the vortex grow fan (with tape) so the the fan is sucking air out of the grow room connect a longer piece of ducting to somewhere outside the room ie the attic (drill/cut a hole in the ceiling if need be ) THIS IS YOUR "OUT AIR"
you "IN AIR" will be a hole at the bottom of the grow room linked from somewhere else that has a window or leeds to the outside ...connect this th a "back draft shutter" which you can get from most diy stores ... on the end of this shutter stretch a piece of satin across it or even a pair of tights (this will stop bugs crawling into your grow room )
that is air flow sorted!
SYSTEM/SOIL
next before you put your system in or soil lol . you need to get some mylar on the walls ...mylar is that shinny stuff that looks like kitchen foil (reflective material)
if your room is 3.5 x 5 ft you need to get 17 feet of mylar coz it has to go all around the room !get the 2mil stuff it works better and doesnt crease as much ..they come in 4foot wide rolls of 25foot so its perfect

put the mylar up so the bottom is 1.5/2feet above the ground dont put it all the way to the ground coz the system /soil and pots will cover it and it will be waisted tape the mylar to the walls with some silver duct tape or normal duct tape .... but it has to be the good stuff the crappy duct tape will not be strong enough (theres been a influx of crap duct tape onto the market )
next is your system as i sed before this is up to you its easy to get 1m x 1m hydroponic systems to fit that space or you can build your own ....if your hell bent on growing in soil go for it , but hydros better : )
oh yer if you decide to grow in soil i suggest you put a damp proof lining down over the floor(just encase of leeks and spills)
LIGHTS....
there are 3 main kind of grow lights
FLO'S (use for early and veg growth)
METAL HALIDES (veg growth)
HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM (flowering)
you dont need a MH but you do need a HPS and some flos
you use flos fro the point your seed germinates to the end of veg growth
then you put it under a hps for flowering

these are high output florecents and are powerful enough to cope with pritty much anything
next you need a HPS 400 or 600 up to you see link : you can get different reflectors but go for the cheapest one... but the best one for you is the sun tube coz you can attach one end to the carbon filter and the other end to the fan so it will remove odours and the heat generated from your grow light ...if you decide to get the sun tube go for the 600 aswell as you might aswell have it lol...

hang the light above the soon to be garden in the middle with the hanging stuff that comes with it ...if you dont get any hangers ,,,just get some small chains and use them (get the ones that arnt welded in the center of the link ..)
NUTES
nutes means fertalizers this will depend on if you go hydro or soil ..but it will be 1 company " canna products"
for soil it will be "canna tera vega" and "canna tera flores"
for hydro it will be "canna aqua vega" and "canna aqua flores"
you also need some pk 0-13-14 (superbloom used in flowering for bigger buds)
the canna products are in the center of the link and the pk is right at the bottom under bio nova soil supermix
