So now my leafs are curling sorta downward. still are getting crispy on the ends, even tho i switched back to water for a little bit, now im using 25% stregth of my ferts for veg which are aqua flakes part a and b.

One good thing is that i can see some roots exiting the bottom of my net pot now, but barely exiting the bottom, when i start the dwc system does the water bubble right at the bottom of the net pot or just up to the bottom of the roots?

MY timer is 18/6 400watt flourlux, mylar walls, fan occasionally when i open the closet door and use a oscillating fan to blow new air in and on the plants from my room air. is that enough? or are they not growing very fast because they need more fresh air? and by fresh can it just be from my bedroom? anyways thats about how im growing.

i also water one time a day every day when the lights on is that right or should i water when lights are off? and i dont measure how much i give them i just pour over the grodan and around the hydroton to get it wet. any suggestions on anything please! i need help! they arent growing as fast and heathly as i wanted and expected, im going to go buy some superthrive today, hopefully that will help out. but im concerned they arent getting enough air....or ???

Hey what is the temp? How old? It looks to young to be giving ferts, you need to flush,

I dont have a temp right now idk, it started growing under t5 light on dec.6 from seed thats when it sprouted, now its under 400watt flourlux. im guessing the temp is probably 75-85 degrees? idk though. so you think i should run water over them? and how often?

flushing is just a term you dont actualy run water thru them, you jsut water as you usually would. water atleast every coulpe of days or when teh soils is dry.if it is over 85 you should water every day

Also you said you started them under a t5 thats the H.O. flouresents? Right if so then i would put it back under that for atlest a little bit longer teh 400 is a lot of light fro that small of plant.

How far are the lights from the plant?

they are about 3 ft above the plant.. and i started it in grodan, then i put the grodan cube in hydroton up to the stem coming from the grodan, and ive just been hand watering with distilled water i get at the store. i also have a test vile and drops to see the ph but i dont know exact ph.

i also have clothes still hanging in the other part of my closet, does that affect the plants growth?

thanks sittin.

no the clothes wont. just contuine to water will reg water no ferts, and get a temp gauge, they look like no water and to hot, same thing happened to me not to long ago and use superthrive on them when they were to young( grabed the wrong container of water) it done the same thing

I left another message on the Basic board before I read this, so you can read both if you'd like.

Anyway, if you're just using distilled water, then what's the purpose of checking the pH. The only reason to adjust pH is to make sure that the level is within acceptable limits to make nutrient uptake possible. Superthive isn't a nutrient. It's a long list of vitamins and hormones, and in my humble opinion isn't for growing herb. If you have only been using distilled water then your plant is suffering from major nutrient deficiencies. Plus, you're hand watering in straight Hydroton. That stuff doesn't hold any water at all. At the very minimum you would need to be watering that 6 times a day. I would leave a dripper on that thing 24/7. You need to read up on hydroponics. Those pH tester solutions suck. They don't tell you a damn thing. Why do you think they only cost $9.95 and a good pH meter cost $100+? You need to give you plant some food, right away.

Here's what I would do if I were you. You'll have to fork out a few bucks, but it will give you a decent return on your investment if you do.

~Buy a nutrient line. GH Flora series or better yet Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow and Bloom. They're a one part nutrient. No mixing, just dump it in your res.

~Invest in a good pH meter and TDS/EC meter. You absolutely have to have those if you're going to grow hydro.

~Get Root 66, Hygrozyme or some other supplement to help in root health.

~Get you T5 right on top of that thing. You can run your HID, but it isn't necessary right now. But a plant can never have too much light. They can be shocked if you move them from a T5 system to straight July sunshine, but I don't think you're doing that.

~Temperature. As long as you're comfortable in your grow room then your plant is. Your problem isn't temperature. Yes, temp does play an important role, but your problem isn't associated with temp.

~Your air isn't your problem. That thing isn't big enough to deplete the CO2 levels in your space. You'll eventually have to worry about that, but not now.

~Buy a good book on Hydro. You don't necessarily have to buy a Hydro Marijuana book, just any hydro book.

Trust me.

seedlings don't like lots of ferts...if any. i start ferts when they're around 2-3 weeks old and very diluted to about 1/5 to 1/3 or so of what directions call for, depending on the brand...they'll let ya know if they can use more by getting a pale or lime green color and less is better in this case, same for watering. save that expensive superthrive for transplanting (and maybe use the money saved to buy some foxfarms' "grow big" fertilizer). superthrive is a great shock reducer and almost a must-have for transplanting but not needed for regular growth. and aren't those grow-balls more for hydro use? being that you're a 1st time grower i strongly urge you to go with a high quality soil...at least until you learn the basics...and maybe even long afterwards. i've been growing outdoors for nearly 30 years now and pushing 20 indoors and still use soil. it's much more forgiving and allows me more away-from-the-garden time than hydro. your plants appear to either be fert-burned or you are using tap water with a high ph. you can use tap water but be sure it is either ph adjusted chemically or use a "britta water filter" for a quick and easy fix. i use the britta pitcher (have two for faster fixin's) and it brings down my extremely hard tap water (off the scale at + 9.5) to a near-perfect low 6...which raises as the filter ages from use but they are good for 45 or so gallons before needing a new cartridge. i'm telling ya...it made a world of difference in my garden!

hope that helps...good luck

I don't think he's using any ferts and his plants are 3-4 weeks old. He said he was using distilled Arrow Head water. It wouldn't matter if the pH is off if there's no nutrients in the water to be available or unavailable to the plant. A charcoal filter, like a Britta, will only get rid of Chlorine. It won't get rid of excess Calcium or Magnesium that makes water hard. If he's not yet using a nutrient program, his plants are severely nutrient deficient.

care to make a bet on that? all it takes is a ph tester kit, hard water and a britta water filter and you can prove it to yourself that it definately DOES fix ph...

and those plants do not appear to have a nutrient deficiency...that does not cause burned leaves!

Del, he hasn't said that he's given his plants any nutrients. . . . AT ALL. . . .They're a month old. What's burning them? The light??? He's got a T5. Nope, it's not that. They're under watered and under fed. The cotyledons can only sustain healthy growth up until the second set of leaves. Superthrive isn't a nutrient regimen. Sorry, but Superthrive sucks.

Britta filters don't remove the elements that make your water hard. Calcium and Magnesium need to be removed with an RO unit (reverse osmosis). Why would people spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on RO units when they can just go buy a Britta pitcher at Walmart for 20 bucks? Yes, I would care to make a bet on that. Use a TDS meter and test your water before and after running through the Britta. I bet there isn't a big change. Let me know how it goes.

Answer me this, then? What are the final stages of severe nutrient deficiency? They wither and die. Just like those. But hey, let the guy flush his plants. Just flush and flush. They won't get better. They'll die.

Do what you want.

ok thanks for the advice guys but heres the rundown:

they sprouted around dec.10 up out of the grodan cube, now it has been growing and i started giving it 25% stregth of my nutrients, which are aqua flakes part a and b from i think home and garden, now they start growing new leafs fine but then they start crisping at the edges eventually, i have it under a 400 watt hps flourlux system, and i did go straight from t5 to my hps. the t5 is not on it anymore only the 400watt hps. i see roots exiting the bottom of my massive 5gal bucket net pot but barely coming out so i think its time for my dwc to be put into effect, if theres any way to go to soil or any help would be very appreciated thanks guys!

When did you start giving the nutes? How far away is your light? 25% strength won't burn your plant at 1 1/2 months old. I give full nutes at 3 weeks in hydro. Are your T5's grow or bloom bulbs? Put it back under your T5, it will like it better for the veg time. Water more frequently than once a day. Check the pH and TDS of your water as that is very important. Check the TDS of your water before you add nutes. Are you in the western US? I can tell you a good store near you if you are. Growing hydro requires a little more know-how than soil but can be very rewarding.

HPS light isn't necessarily best for veg growth. The T5 will get you very good growth. If you're in/around LA I'll tell you a few stores to go to.

~Hydroasis. I think they're in Culver City or nearby. Very knowledgeable staff.

~H2O Hydro. San Pedro. Very good staff and nice.

~Don't go to Discount Hydro in Riverside. They suck. If you're in the Inland Empire go to IE Hydrogarden in Temecula.

~San Diego Hydroponics. Nice stores. Well stocked.

There's a million stores in the SoCal area. Just pick one.

Bottom line is you need to drop a little coin to be successful growing hydro.

so u think the best thing is to switch back to the t5 hanging right above the plant on 18/6 same as the hps? So when do i use my expensive hps setup i got? thanks for the help cali. can u put some pics of any grows u have done? THANKS! and i wish i could just meet up with u at one of the stores if u live nearby and chat it up and get some knowledge, i really need a partner grower, not to help me grow neccassarily just to be able to give plants if i get into a situation where i think the cops are coming , so that they will not DIE! well anyways it would be an easier way to get some seeds also seeing as i think you grow . = ) later.

Okay so last night, i got the airstones and stuff for my dwc and set it up, mixed nutrients and stuff got a temp and it ranges from 78-82F and the humidity is like 30-40 usually when i check. so the water is touching the bottom of the net pot, where i saw roots coming out by the very bottom so they are close to going into water is that the right height i should have it? and just keep the bubbler on 24/7? cuz its on 24/7 right now. its looking pretty heathly the bottom leaf stopped spreading the crisp brown at the edges and hoping never see that brown again. but i mixed 3 gals worth of water with my nutes at full stregth and added superthrive at the right amount, and i only have the vile ph check so i did it of my water when it was mixed and it looked to be the color of the 4.0 to 5.0 range will it naturally go up or is that a bad water to be bubbling under the bottom with? THANKS and if you know a way to get the ph up without buying ph up that might help too?

while you're working on getting your hydro system dialed in why not get a batch growing in soil? soil is much eaiser and way more forgiving and at least you'll have something for your efforts while waiting to get the answers to your hydro probs...and you don't need any extra equipment...just a few pots and some soil (you already have the lights)!

you won't have enough time to clear out the garden once you get into a cop "situation". it's best to keep your grow and yourself a total secret...quiet growers last longer.

thanks DEL, so growing in soil is easier, but i dont have a ph meter yet so i think that might be my problem, that will affect soil too right or is soil easier with the ph too? also what do u think is burning the tips of the leafs like that of my plant its making me mad! and its about 8 inches now tall from bottom of the stem, has about 2 healthy leafs 2 more under those but a little crisping at the end, and also they all only have 3 fingers on each internode that grows only gives out 3 fingers when should i be seeing different?

the short amount of leaves is probably a result of the plants being stressed, for whatever reason (i still think it's worth your time checking out your water).

and yes, soil is much easier and way more forgiving if there's a fuck up along the way. ph is still important and can be easily and cheaply checked with a simple test kit that can be bought for under 10 bucks. hydro calls for a more technical meter and the good ones and ones worth having are expensive. i'm not knocking hydro...it cuts down on the time (at least 3 weeks) and the end result is just as good but hydro takes up a lot of time and near-daily visits to adjust this or that where soil allows one to leave the garden for many days, depending on pot size.
