Hi folks, Finally its harvest time. These are grown under a 400w hps, start to finish. I forgot to include something for a height reference, but they are about 24" to 30" tall, grown in hydroton and 5.5" pots.

These seedlings will replace the harvested crop. The seeds were chucked into jiffy-7 peat pucks. The seeds germinated and poked out, and then the pucks, with germinated seedling were transplanted into the 8oz cups with hydroton. That was a week ago. Lighting for this stage is floro. They actually are 3 "undercounter" lights, like found in the kitchen. I mounted them side by side on a board. Each lite has two 15w tubes, for a total of 90watts.

Next step will be to put the seedlings under the 400hps in a day or so. More updates to come.

UHH...well, bigger pots would normally be good advice, but in this system it would result in a big LOSS in yield. This ebb-flo hydro system was specifically designed with pot size in mind. Each "module" or tub, holds 18 pots perfectly. The pic is a prototype using rockwool, but we have switched to clay long ago.

Even the seeds were bred with this system in mind to grow heavy single, or double colas if they get topped. Each pot averages around 3/4 to 1 oz dry yield.

Now, doing some math, with a 400w lite producing 18oz every ten weeks in each module, thats over the magical gram per watt number that folks like to get. Who's to say, that same 400w might even be able to cover two modules? Then maybe add in a light mover? and a couple more modules? Who knows?

Anyways, appreciate the help offered, but this is not a newby grow, the envrionmental contitions are dialed in perfectly, the system operates effortlessly, and we measure growth by the hour, not by the day like most.

Heres an old pic of the first one made and everything can be bought {except hydroton} at walmart or hardware stores. Pull up a chair and stay awhile.

After a few days under the 400, they are starting to get used to the bigger lite and stronger nutes. PPM was worked up from about 400ppm to around 900ppm right now. PH is kept around 5.5 to 5.8 and they are flooded, or fed, every 4hrs under a 20on/4off lite cycle.

Flooding is totally automatic, and the feed pump runs off a timer. When the flooding is finished, the nutes drain back down into the resivour, thru the pump. My lazy ass dosent really have to do much but keep water in the rez {every other week via hose from faucet}, and check that the PPM & PH stay within range every week or so.

Have an ocillating fan blowing 24/7, and the stems are already getting thick and sturdy. The 400hps has produced several internodes in just a few inches.

Once the seedlings become rootbound in the cups {a few more days}, we will transplant into the 5.5" pots, and likely also top the main grow tip at the same time.

OK, roots are sticking out the drainage hole in the cups, and the lowest single leaf is starting to turn yellow, SOOO i guess its transplant time.

Its a snap, heres how. Turn the cup upside down in the palm of the hand. Gently squeeze the bottom of the cup. Thats loosens the root ball enough that it slides right out in your hand. Gently grab the stem and set it in the pot. Bury the rootball right up to the bottom set of leaves in moist hydroton, soil, or whatever you are using. The buried stem will eventually grow roots and make a healthier plant all around.

Try and keep the same envrionmental contitions as while they were in the cups. Same light distance, same ppm, same ph, temp, humidity, and whatever else. That prevents shock and there should be no drooping or health issues. They should take off and start growing immediatelly.

After they all are transplanted and in the pots, we flood the tray right away. It kinds "settles" the medium around the roots, and makes sure everyting is equally wetted Then its just back to the same feeding and lighting schedule. Sit back and watch em grow.

Didnt prune any tops yet and still havent really decided if its gonna happen this time. We will keep them on the 20on/4off lite cycle until they get several inches taller, then flip the lite to 12/12, and we can pull the males as they show sex.

Went around and pruned the main grow tip off all of them 5 days ago. That always slows down growth for a few days until some plant hormones have time to relocate to lower branch tips.

Now just waiting on the girls to grow up a bit more. One of the catch-22's with MJ is that the tallest, healthiest, most vigerous plants are most often males. Females generally are shorter and bushier, and seem to be lagging behind.

Notice the plant on the right is taller, but lankier, with more space between branches,{internodes}. That one is likely a male. The one on the left is shorter, but the internodes are closer together, and its bushier. It proly is a female. None of them have shown preflowers yet, so i dont know that for sure. Its just an indicator of what the sex could be. So treat those short, fat girls right, and you might be rewarded down the line.
