Christians besieged in Iraq

By Frances Harrison
Religious affairs correspondent
March 13,2008

Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho is thought to be the highest-ranking Chaldean Catholic clergyman to be killed in the violence in Iraq.

He was the Archbishop of Mosul which, along with Baghdad, has been one of the worst places for attacks on Christians.

For the Christians still remaining in Mosul the reaction may very well be that this death is neither the first nor likely to be the last.

The Barnabas Fund, a charity in the UK that has tried to help Iraqi Christians, says there have been some very nasty cases of Christians being abducted, tortured and then killed and it says many Christians in Iraq are now deadened to the violence.

Bombs

But on the other hand the Archbishop was very high-profile and that will have a shock value.

What might make a difference to the reaction to this news is whether the Archbishop, who was elderly, just died of the stress of being kidnapped or was actively tortured and murdered. He was reported to be on medication for heart problems. Exactly how he died is not clear yet.

But his death is the latest in a string of attacks on churches, priests and lay Christians.

In January, bombs exploded outside three Chaldean and Assyrian churches in Mosul, two churches in Kirkuk and four in Baghdad.

The attacks seem to have been co-ordinated all over the country to occur at roughly the same time. And this was not the first time violence had come close to Archbishop Rahho.

Last June, his secretary, a priest called Ragheed Ganni, was shot dead in his church along with three of his companions.

In 2005 the Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, Basile Georges Casmoussa, was kidnapped but released.

And in 2006, an Orthodox priest, Boulos Iskander, was snatched off the streets of Mosul by a group that demanded a ransom. Even though it was paid by his family they still beheaded him. Worse still, when his body was found, the priest's arms and legs had also been cut off.

Money motive

In many cases the motivation behind attacks on Christians is religious - to drive the minority out of Iraq. But very often criminal groups or bandits pretend to belong to a jihadist group in order to mask their true motive - which is money.

Christians are regarded as having money and they are known to sacrifice everything to pay ransom demands - partly because, unlike Shia or Sunni, they do not have powerful tribal or militia links to protect them, so they are a soft target.

It's thought about half the Christian population of Iraq has moved - the majority to Syria, fewer to Jordan and some to northern Iraq

In the university of Mosul, there are reports of Christian students being targeted - with notices being put up warning the girls to wear a hijab and giving Christians a choice between dying, converting to Islam or leaving the town.

A year ago there were also reports of a push to drive Christians out of the historically Christian suburb of Dora in southern Baghdad, with some Muslims accusing the Christians of being allies of the Americans.

Exodus

The charity Barnabas says one of its partners in Iraq conducted research into 250 Iraqi Christians displaced to the north of the country a year ago and found nearly half had witnessed attacks on churches or Christians, or been personally targeted by violence.

Nobody knows how many of Iraq's Christians have now fled. Before the war there were estimated to be about 800,000 and Chaldeans were the largest Christian community in Iraq.

It is thought about half the Christian population of Iraq has moved - the majority to Syria, fewer to Jordan and some to northern Iraq.

Of the 1.5m Iraqi refugees in Syria it is assumed around 20% are Christian, but firm figures are hard to come by.

That means, as a proportion, Christians are massively over-represented in the Iraqi refugee population.

Syrian churches have been helping the refugees and say they speak of being forced to convert to Islam or flee, women being told to wear Islamic dress and those who sell alcohol for communion being beaten.

The killing of the archbishop of Mosul and the spate of bomb blasts against churches in January may well put off those Christian refugees in Syria who were contemplating returning to their country, even if it does not trigger a new exodus from Iraq.

i went downtown yesterday and there were 3 protests:

- canadian military occupation of afghanistan

- newfoundland seal hunt

- scientology

the scientology protest was hilarious...they wore costumes and occupied both corners of the street next to the scientology office and put the hurt on ron's cult...i wondered: why would so many young people feel more outrage over a fringe cult based in the usa than the canadian seal hunt and occupation of aghanistan? their protest was easily ten times the size of the stupid seal hunt protest...why can't we organize the majority of people who want to relax marijuana enforcement and pull out of iraq? maybe people are afraid to speak out against the government for fear of having a flaming tire of patriotism hung around their necks

THESE WARS OVER RELIGION dismay me! Kinda hypocritical if you ask me. Spread love NOT HATE!

Hey FR we need to start a CULT to further the legalization of MMJ.....I was so proud of Snoop Doggy Dog came out speaking to Barbara Walters[WAWA] about MMJ that he personally uses.

Dawn Wells 70 year old actress was caught recently by LEO with 4 roaches in her car. "the hitchikers left them" she said! She played Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island.....Gilligan was once busted for MJ also.

scoop doggy poop smokes pot? wow that's a mindblower! who would have guessed? this is going to turn the rap community inside out!!

haha?

i don't think that mmj should be separated from mj as a legal issue because the government would severely restrict the number of people eligible for legal mmj, and then use that status as another excuse to crack down on recreational mj (including hypocritical medical users like snoopy who think pot makes you a bad person and a bad father)

I did not know he said that in 2002....but he does seem to be a good husband and father. And a good productive American. His chances of success outside the hood was probably nil without his music popularity.

i don't care if he's a successful, productive, american, married, father...he's still a hypocrite...i wouldn't be surprised if he bought a medical marijuana card from some doctor to protect himself against future busts...what is his medical condition anyway? none of my business, right?

Speaking of hypocrisy BTW...interesting chat with a gentleman from London who attended London Chanology a scientologist demonstration done by ANONYMOUS there as well...Apparently it was world wide the protest...but he said the following and I hardily agree.....

"I am an Atheist...I don't believe in god...or the supernatural. I think we die and that is it. Life is immensly precious. Is scientology a religion? I can't distinguish one set of nonsensce[sp] from another. I would define religion as any collective belief system that involves a supernatural belief in the 'spirit'

"If anyone takes their religious book seriously, you are in a fuck load of trouble if you cross them...AMEN BROTHER!
"Mainsteam faith should not be thought of as a homogenous orginisation."
Mel Gibson's father = Catholicism gone wrong.

Abuse of the DMCA and asymetrical litigations through attrition are problems of our age. People with lots of money litigate till others give up[Lisa Mc Phereson]
In mainstream religion there have been deaths, suicides, excorcisms, child abuse, extremism, racism, financial irregularities, etc, etc...
So mainstream religion is not better than the scientologists it seems. Two wrongs don't make a right. My belief is ALL religion is wrong. That is my choice, others have theirs.
But it is not my place to be evangelical about my beliefs or to tell others what to believe. What pisses me and this guy off is when they step outta their domain, and interfere with politics, science, and law. That is as bad as an atheist/humanist expecting a say in theology or advise on the spirit. WTF EVER THAT IS ANYWAY.

Peace to you Lulz......seeya in U.K. someday babydoll!

that's not the same thing...snoop's job is not threatened by revelations about his pot use...snoop's job involves writing and performing songs about pot, and posing for promotional photographs with cannabis, and smoking pot on music videos and live on stage during his "puff puff pass" tour...if he was protecting his career by saying things like pot kills your brain cells and makes you less of a person and a father, then how is it protecting his career by telling barb walters that he needs medical marijuana because he "can't see that good"?

maybe he is a legitimate medical marijuana user, but he's still a hypocrite whose face and words appear on drugwar propaganda used against us

Well it about time ya woke up. Don't let the three hour time difference stop you. That is why I miss Budsy...he was an early morning agitator. I have to get up at 7 am ET to get across the bay to babysit the babies. killin' my ass these kids are and this 10 week olds is the last one I will do this for.

But I am finding more and more nurses secretly smoking in their off time and they really can't afford to get caught. You can lose your liscence with BPR as fast with pot as diverting morphine.
But I don't worry too much now as I am only working a little and I can make money consulting with medical lawyers if I want to leave the clinical setting. I never smoke when I am scheduled a shift as too many important and quick thinking decisions might come up. I mostly supervise these days, but that in itself is scary. 16 nurses and nearly 400 patients that I am responsible for.

SCARY INDEED! LOL! DAMN snoop Dog ya let ole Sar down.....hard to find hero's these days!
