"eh?" is the american equivalent of ending a sentence with "right?" or "yknowwhatimean?"
because of our cultural imperative to be timid, polite, apologetic, and drunk, our language developed to end every sentence in an upward tone as if it were a question...and where that is not possible, we add an 'eh?' to the end of a sentence, and/or a sorry to the beginning of a sentence like so:
"sorry, we're going down to the basement to drink a case of homebrew, eh?"
BTW: don't forget to bring a voltage converter and a french-english dictionary when you come up for a visit, eh?
