High-level al-Qaeda member captured, U.S. says

Authorities have captured a high-level al-Qaeda figure who helped Osama bin Laden escape from Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Friday.

The United States Department of Defence said in a release that "high-value detainee" Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani has been transferred to the country's prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The CIA transferred al-Afghani to the Pentagon's custody this week, officials said, but declined to reveal when or where the prisoner had been captured.

In a memo obtained by the Associated Press, CIA Director Michael Hayden said al-Afghani was detained last summer and suggested he was not captured by American authorities, writing that he "was eventually moved into U.S. custody."

Hayden said al-Afghani's combat experience dates to the 1980s and included plots against U.S. and Afghan targets.

The Defence Department said al-Afghani had ties to al-Qaeda throughout the Middle East and was "one of bin Laden's most trusted facilitators and procurement specialists prior to his detention."

Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said the detainee helped prepare bin Laden's mountain hideout at Tora Bora when the U.S. mission in Afghanistan began in 2001 and later assisted the al-Qaeda leader's escape.

There are approximately 280 detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison.

I don't believe this country will have it's dignity back until bin laden's head is on a stick displayed for the whole world to see. And better yet it would be an American soldier, maybe a sergeant or staff sergeant, that put that head on that stick.
best wishes,
HM

remember what you said about organizations with money creating a scenario that they just happen to profit from? if bin laden's head was on a stick in front of the white house, and al qaida was defeated, americans might start asking funny questions about iraq and afghanistan and the wah ahn terrah money pit...you can't find what you're not looking for

Q But don't you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won't truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.

bin laden would be in a cage right now if bush had channelled the world's sympathy into capturing him after 911, and the rest of the world would have helped foot the bill...so far bush has dumped over half a trillion dollars into iraq...thanks to contributions from UN member nations, the first gulf war cost the usa less than $10 billion...talk about a wasted opportunity, eh? oh well at least george got a nice snuff video of saddam and some gore shots of his sons for the bush family album
