Picked this up from a Dick Morris article. Sleazy though he may be, he's an astute political observer. His advice to Obama.

The next time Hillary uses the recycled red phone ad, counter with one of your own. When the phone rings in the middle of the night, have a woman’s voice, with a flat Midwestern accent, answer it and say, “Hold on” into the receiver. Then she should shout, “Bill! It’s for you!”

Saw on TV a radio talk show guy I'd never heard of. He cracked me up when he said,

"The Clintons never give up. When you think the ball game is over, they meet you in the parking lot by your car."

Interesting read, particularly his thoughts that the general election is a
foregone conclusion. If Obama is elected, these are just a few of the ways he
intends to increase federal government revenues:

- Repeal Bush tax cuts

- Double capital gains to 29%

- Raise employee contributions to Social Security to 12.4% and adjust cap
beyond $97,000

- Carbon Tax

His business agenda:

- Repeal/renegotiate NAFTA

- All employees must have a pension plan

- Organize unions w/out elections

- 60% employees health care paid by employers

Foreign policy:

- Nearly a trillion dollars in extra foreign aid by 2015

Obviously, if his platform is enacted, the economy, already on life support,
most likely gets mired in a nasty downturn.

The question that I have asked myself recently is this: Can an Obama
presidency do for the libertarian/conservative movement what the Carter
presidency did?

Obama had the most liberal voting record in the Senate in 2007. Is it
possible, knowing a tad bit of history, to root for Obama, pay out the butt for
his thoughtless economic policies for 4 years, knowing very well that
Americans would swing hard right in repudiation in 2012 just like 1980?

DB,

I know. Seeing it all in one place is sobering. It's another election of the lesser evil.

A lot of Obama supporters don't care about the details, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. They simply are fed up with "the way it is" and want change. Obama is the flag carrier for the younger generations, blacks and to a lesser extent Hispanics, all of whom are the future of the country. Sea change ahead I think.

I don't like McCain for three reasons. He is a crook (uninditeted
co-conspirator in the Keating S&L scandal. He is as much a part of
the elite ruling class as anyone except Ted Kennedy (just another career
politician) and he is as much, or more, liberal than Mrs. Clinton.

I think it's time to break the ice on the first black President thing.

So, maybe I'll vote for Obama unless McLame picks Fred Thompson for his
running mate.

...lol

I can't believe I am reading the words that you have typed Shootist. McCain was just on 60 minutes btw. I don't like him because he seems to have a bad temper. Maybe it's just me but it seems like the kind of temper that's brought on by not feeling very well, grumpy old men kinda thing. But maybe he has always been like that.

He did say that he would go after Bin Laden. It would be nice to have a President that recognized the criminal acts of that individual and put his head on a stick.

Part of me wants Obama just to have someone different and Billary doesn't constitute different, vagina or no, there taint nothing new there imo.

Fred Thompson scares me.

best wishes,
HM

Anything is better than Hillary or Obama.

Want a welfare state? Hillary or Obama

Socialized medicine? Hillary or Obama

Screwed up USA? Hillary or Obama

Real change means really screwed in this instance!

Odds are, Obama will be about as effective as Jimmy Carter.

McCain will give us the same social welfare as Mrs. Clinton, he'll just take the scenic route to get there.

Want a welfare state? You got it lock, stock and barrel with Bush.

A Healthcare Plan? It's the Republican do whatever Bush says Plan, it's called "Don't get Sick Healthcare reform"

Screwed up USA? Anybody buy gas lately? Heard of the possible recession? All thanks to Bush.

McBush is about right.

McCain - Clinton. ~shiver~ It's like looking into some kind of twisted mirror.

I really dislike McCain. He likes to position himself as a maverick but he is a third generation political elitist who will do most anything to get and keep power. The only good thing going for him is that he is old and getting older. If he would select a running mate with solid Conservative credentials, like Fred Thompson, there is a better than even chance that the latter will end up with the Presidency. Which may be the only silver lining in this entire matter.

As to the hildabeast; there is nothing good to be said about the junior Senator from the idiots of NY. She's trying to get Obama to play second as her Veep. Does anyone see that happening?

At this point, if Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination the democrat party will implode. After all the dems are the party of "one man, one vote" and Obama has the popular support. This election has the potential to be the greatest political show of my lifetime and could give the Presidency to McCain and his party of oxymoronic "big government conservatives".

You've heard about elections where you have to choose between the lesser of two evils? This election you have to choose between worse and worser.

And for those of you who vapidly believe that Obama represents "change". He is a Chicago politician. You can't be a Chicago politician without permission from the political machine, and the mob. He is a tool, but if elected, won't be the first tool to be President.

The USA is up to its eyeballs in deficits, and thats because of BUSH, giving someone else the tax and spend like Obama is like saying lets make it worse! Hillary would have us in deficit territory no matter what.

The only positive thing the democrats offer is an end to the Iraq war.

She would raise taxes and borrow.

Prediction. If a dem wins the whitehouse they will find themselves in
much the same position as Bill Clinton did during his first term. Slick
inherited such a budget deficit from Reagan and the Tip O'Neill Congress
that he enacted exactly 0 bills from his campaign platform, including
Mrs. Clinton's failed attempt at socialize healthcare. Currently, the
US is printing money to stem the hemorrhaging in the FIRE (finance,
insurance, real estate) industry. I would think that the next president
is going to be restricted in their ability to enact expensive social
(engineering) programs (hint: This is a Good Thing). And we still have
to *fix* Medicare and Social Security.

As far as spending money it matters more who controls the Congress than who controls the White House. The President proposes, the Congress disposes...

If the same party holds both the presidency and a majority in Congress, then you can count only upon their doing whatever it takes to stay in power and on the public dole. Right now, it appears the Democrats are in very good shape. They already have majorities in both houses of Congress, and there's no reason to believe that their majorities will decrease.

At the moment, the only way to slow down the inexorable decline of America is to hope that there is sufficient conservatism in the U.S. Senate (read: 40+ Senators who are willing to vote no, just for the hell of it) to stall action on major spending initiatives.

Like many of you, I have no hope that the cream is rising to the top in US politics. Despite all their grandstanding, I have almost no hope that this country will avoid severe economic times, not seen here since the Great Depression. I hope I'm wrong.

If there's anything we can agree on right now, it ought to be that things in this country are really fucked up. There must be a clear path out of this mess but those in power are too invested in their own self-interests to find it.

Maybe it's time to get back to basics.

Peace, Sage

I have wondered about the country becoming realigned too Sage and to be honest worry about it. I had a boss who I didn't like, he was a real dick to be honest, a cut throat. The one bit of information though that I got from him although it will do me no good is that he said the economy was going to go to crap, cuz it's all built on paper basically. He was an old east coast banker btw. He said that people should take their money and put it in gold cuz everything else is going to collapse and the gold will hold it's value. Even tho he was an ass, i think with this monetary thing he might have been right.
best wishes,
HM

Shootist,

"And we still have to *fix* Medicare and Social Security."

The "Warren Buffett Solution" is the only way out of the squeeze IMO. The top 5% of earners account for 35% of income and pay about 60% of taxes. This seems unfair, but the politicians know that the top 5% also have over 60% of the wealth in the country.

Raise income tax rates on the top tier, impose a stiff estate tax, and ta da, problem solved. Then, brace yourself for the unintended consequences and the further weakening of the U.S.

Our politicians have over spent and over promised, and have to soon starting coughing up the dough in unprecedented quantities. Why go after the rich? Willie Sutton robbed banks during the Depression because, he explained, "That's where the money is."

Privatize SS - increasing the percentage and cap and let the gubbyment
manage it? It is simply setting the money on fire. If I am "forced" to
contribute, fine, just let me manage it.

Insofar as "going after the rich" to increase gubbyment revenue - hasn't this
been tried before? How about expanding the economy? More consumption,
more sales, more income, more tax revenue.

Remember Slick Willy? Its the economy, stupid! The economy expanded and
the budget was balanced with nary, as far as I can remember, an increase in
income tax.
