Does it seem like big picture stuff is getting worse:

-- Climate change

-- Rising unrest globally

-- War in Iraq and Afghanistan

-- Financial market volatility

Or has it always been like this, it's just that the threats have changed:

-- Cold War

-- Vietnam

-- Runaway inflation

-- Pollution

...

What do you think?

B - great question!

This is an area where there is unequivocal agreement between science and
religion - the world is going to end.

In the context of broader history, an area of study that I have just a
smattering of understanding, I believe we are just fine. Some thoughts:

- More people, as a percentage, live in somewhat free, democratic societies
than ever before.

- Modern medicine has unbelievably altered the quality and length of life.

- Economies cycle, always have, always will.

- These "conflicts" are nothing compared to the carnage of WW1 or WW2 -
80,000,000 folks died during those wars.

- Climate change? The climate is always going to change. If, and a dubious
assumption at best, carbon is causing global warming, I have full trust, well
founded, that technology will fix the solution. Remember the gasoline engine
is essentially 1.0 as far propulsion systems go.

The larger concern, at least for me, is the erosion of the Western Civilization.

When she dies, welcome to the modern Dark Ages.

things are reported now more and known to the whole world in a matter of minutes whereas in the past there was more privacy. But much of the news is morality based exceesses if you look at what is called sex scandals. in the past, man could have many wives so there would be less cheating.

What about a woman who wanted more husbands, this is discriminationk, or males dominating the life structure. it may have been assumed that no woman wanted more than 1 hubby which would have meant multiple childrens.

It does feel like the end is near, in terms of a war that would have multiple nuclear fighting going on, that to me is apocylytical that would result in million of deaths and possibly the destruction of the earth and/or for religious people the coming of the Messiah.

Financial chaos is one of the sighns of the end, but I don';t see this now. i know that many do. I see what we have now is simply part of the cycle. I beleive the US dollar will get strong again.

I try not to let these things bring me down too much there is always opportunity in every change.

good post dabullz

i don't think it's the end of the world completely, but i do think it's the
beginning of the end of our current paradigm.

i think there will be a significant consciousness/paradigm-shift in the near
future. scientific materialism doesn't give us all the answers, it's a myth we
use to understand our universe just like those humans of the past did with
animism and theisms... and i think it's losing it's footing in the wake of the
new sciences like quantum physics... once we begin to truly see the limits of
the current science, we'll start moving forward.

i think it will be a period of awakening ... but i think there will always be
exploitation, so it can either be dark times or beautiful times. with the way
the elite are behaving up top, it worries me.

sidenote: we are in solar minimum right now (no sunspots, flares, none)... solar
maximum will be around 2010/2011...........

biggest one in recorded history... and there were not nearly as many
technologies that would have been affected back then... we'll see what happens.

wouldn't be too bad if no one could use cell phones. that would be a nice relief.

I don't get the solar maximum thing ...

Is that going to have some other apocalyptic effect?

I remember back when I was in grad school, we were at the height of the late cold war (early 1980s) and I felt like ... well, if we have a nuclear war, at least I won't have to finish my thesis! That gave me some cold comfort...

Like Bum says, though, I guess we'll see over the next couple of years.

On the financial side, last week was certainly historic, one way or the other. Either the first (of many) IBs went down, or the Fed saved a major run on the bank from spiralling us downwards.

While they may not be apocalyptic, they sure are volatile...

i wouldn't call it apocalyptic... it may have a serious effect on the technologies
we rely on everyday, which could have some interesting effects on humans.

B, what is this historic event you're talking about? what does IB stand for?

Hi --

Sorry for being so cryptic. IB stands for "investment bank" and what was historic was the bailout of Bear Stearns last weekend, by JP Morgan Chase but guaranteed by the Federal Government.

Bear Stearns was almost forced into bankruptcy because no one wanted to buy any of their assets at any price that they could afford to sell at.

The Fed was worried that Bear Stearns' bankruptcy would start a domino effect of other banks not being able to meet their obligations, so they were extremely interested in getting a seller -- and there weren't any to be found. This is for a company that was supposedly worth many billions of dollars two weeks ago.

Things are looking a bit rosier today, but it's still incredibly volatile ...

Hope that helps, Bum
