Mr. B. is on to something there. It is a damn good guitar solo.

I am partial to Led Zeppelin's 1975 tour when they played Stairway to Heaven. There are some true sonic moments there.

I saw Dick Dale back in 2001, in KC, MO. It was a small joint called the Grand Emporium, but they had some big names come through. If you don't know who Dick Dale is, think of Pulp Fiction's main song. The instrumental song is called Miserlou. Dick Dale still tours and he's been called the king of surf guitar.

Check him out, he will blow your mind. Anyway, there were a few moments at that show that just made my jaw drop.

In closing, I think in order to be the best guitar solo, it must be played live. The studio can make everything beautiful with careful editing and a 100 takes. When the artist is on stage, they get one chance to get that face melting solo just right.

I think you can find Elvin Bishop on youtube. It is something else and well worth your time.

Be cool,
Auto

this is kinda hard, there are alot of great guitar players out there. I like Johnny Winters, ZZ Top and those types but for this thread I think I am going to date myself and my generation and run with the devil.

Ok, I have to include Gibbons. ZZ Top would be me favorite group of all time, some of it's cuz of the guitar, most of it's cuz they are just bad ass.

Wiri,

I would have to agree with you on the comfortably numb solo, totally rocks.

In the early 60's there was a band called Spirit. One of their songs "Mechanical World" has some really great guitar work as well.

I thought about this for a while and have to go with Mark Knopfler in a Dire Straights gig - Telegraph Road, but my mind changes minute to minute. How can you compare him with Brownie McGee, or Blind Blake of Django Reinhart (sp?), and I'm so partial to rockabilly. and Andres Segovia.
