Sitting here posting on my 8 year old laptop that is one of the only surviving casualties of Y2K (It has Windows ME for an operating system).

A week ago, my desktop blew a power supply (serves me right for not keeping it clean. After it ceased to operate I turned it around and saw that all the vent holes were covered with a thick blanket of dust). Took it to my local computer shop and was told that it's a proprietary power supply. I have to find a replacement from Gateway (nyet!) or some other place, or...buy a new computer (gasp!)

It appears that all the computers on the market now are loaded with Windows Vista, and Vista is not getting great reviews. I was very happy with Windows XP...wondering if I can still buy a system with it..??

Thinking about going back to Dell. Hard to believe it's been more than 10 years since I bought my first one. I got a lot of hardware for my money from Gateway, but they are notorious for not shipping what you order, then you have to go through the hassle of getting it all straightened out.

Maybe I should buy local..?? Oh what a hassle this is going to be lol

Peace, Sage

www.apple.com

You know what they say back in the 'hood - once you go mac, you ain't ever
comin' back!

Seriously, you can install windows on a partition and run whatever windows
based programs you need. I got a macbook pro laptop and a mac pro
desktop. The laptop runs the same as it did when I pulled it out of the box 3
years ago. The desktop will last for a decade, scalable to 4 teras of mem, 32
gigs of ram, and on and on.

Good luck with your search -

DB

YES get a new computer

my windows ME operating system kept crashing and there were a lot of things i can't see/do on the internet(s)...youtube and music CD's were choppy...and that huge cathode ray tube monitor occupied a lot of desk real estate

i had some good experiences with DELL but they really let me down last time so i won't be buying from them again because of the indian call centers...vista is working pretty good for me though...i think toshiba makes the best laptops, and hewlett packard has excellent engineering

i can't go with an apple computer because i use tax software that isn't compatible with apple, but they make good computers

i have an affordable intel 6600 dual core chip which eats through my digital photographs in a fraction of the time it took with my old computer...if i could change anything i *might* have invested more in a graphics card but i am not a gamer so i didn't really need it...i don't think quad core is going to provide much of a performance benefit unless you edit/produce movies on your computer

Hey Sage...sorry to hear about your computer problems. I recently was able to bring a Compaq laptop back from the dead twice. First diagnosed and replaced a faulty fan (dirt in the vent will also kill those things), then replaced a corrupted system file that prevented the computer from booting up. You might try picking up a power supply on e-bay. They aren't that hard to install.

To answer your specific question, yes....there are still computers available from a few manufacturers that come with XP rather than Vista. Dell (whose tech support isn't what it used to be, but is still better than most) and Acer, to name two. If you don't see it advertised on-line, call and ask someone in sales. Or you might try doing what I did...go on your local Craigslist. I bought a brand new Acer desktop for $240 from a mortgage company that had gone belly-up. They never even had unpacked it. Also, check Overstock.com and HeartlandAmerican.com. Deals on XP computers can often be found on both.

No doubt about it, Apple's are far less hassle, but my work prevents me from using one.

Good luck. I hope you find what you want/need.

Geeze - I guess it didnt sink the first time I said it -

YOU CAN RUN WINBLOWS ON YOUR APPLE!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVDmyc_h6R0

Demonstration

They can run at the same time! You can alt between them at anytime! You
can spend your time fixing the endless bugs of Windblows on your Apple, and
then, when you feel like being productive, you can switch right over to
Leopard!

Seriously, running Winblows is like driving an '79 Chevette, running Leopard
is like driving an '08 M5. One always breaks down and needs fixin', the other
just simply runs and is an absolute joy to own.

I gave Apple a quick look, but decided to go with Dell. I just ordered it, and should have it in a week or two. I'm excited :))

Inspiron 530 Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.40Ghz 1066FSB) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MB cache

4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz

22 in (22 in viewable) E228WFPWide Aspect Digital Flat Panel

256MB Radeon HD 2600 XT video card

500GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive(7200RPM)

I was able to get it with Windows XP too, which is good because (the salesman says) my Office XP wouldn't work with Vista.

I saved money by buying it from a salesman over the phone rather than doing an online purchase. I configured it online, then called and ordered it from a human. He cut the cost of the system by a few bucks, gave me free shipping, and threw in at no additional cost two additional years of warranty and one year of accident coverage.

Oh, and they had a great price on a GO 720 GPS so I'll never get lost again lol

Thanks for the tips, folks.

Peace, Sage
