That's the only thing that makes me sad about NOLA. I have a friend who's brother was a Cop when Katrina went down. He had so many emotional issues afterwards from what he witnessed and saw that played such a toll in his life in general. Thus far, he still has challenges but alike so many NOLA residents, they all re-located here (Houston) and won't go back (not to say I blame some of them - but the thugs, they need to go and go QUICKLY!!!)

NOLA was a lot of fun before Katrina I was told. I wouldn't want to live there though like do-gooders Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (if you really can call that their "residence"). I have heard that pre-Katrina, Mardi Gras was anything goes. That's pretty crazy.

I guess that's where the expression "Crazy Cajun" comes from.

A lot of people moved to Baton Rouge too, where I now spend one week a month. The traffic is terrible. I was in New Orleans a few weeks ago for a Hornets game against the Spurs. The scene wasn't too bad. I had a lot of fun at the game and it was packed with fans. It was a lot better than the year prior when I went down to the Zulu parade.

Peace, UK

Some of the most beautiful classic bridges are in and around the Baton Rouge area. It's a shame they are jammed with cars now. I was there about a year ago and went to an old general store that was over 100 years old. They boosted that it pre-dated automobiles and it still had the original doors on it. They had LSU Football schedules dating back to the 40's and pictures of Horses and Wagons from the early days of the store. Also had great Burgers, Sandwiches, and of Course Cajun Food.

me and my exhusband went to new orleans and stayed in the french quarter a couple times before katrina. we went to some of the restaurants, listened to the bands, (so much music) and strolled down bourbon street. we didn't do any of the festivals but i had always wanted to go back and do that. the different mixes of culture down there were awesome to me. i don't know what has become of it all since katrina, but at the time, new orleans seemed to be one of the best and oldest parties around.

New Orleans has nothing to do with the bayou country, completely different culture.

Thibodaux, Lafayette, New Iberia and Mamou, LA on the other hand . . .

Wow, that's interesting...I guess people from Thibodaux, New Iberia, Mamou, etc.....can't come to NOLA and sing that song? I know for a fact it's placed in NOLA because it's a cajun song and NOLA is big on tourism with regard to Cajun Culture regardless of where they lived and which Parish they came from.

Are you from Louisiana?

I'm sorry, AG. I was caught up in the times this song was written. The
Cajuns (coonasses) I've known don't claim the creole culture. While the
distinctions have blurred over time, the "jambalay, crawfish pie,
filé gumbo" culture of "da bayou" has never had anything
to do with the "muffaletta" culture of the Mississippi delta.
The music is different, the food is different, the origins of the people
are different and the patois is different.

And yes, they happily play the song in New Orleans; I'd guess because
it's bot fun and popular.

You ought'ta go to d'Iberville or New Iberia sometimes, whihc, as shootist mentions is way different than New Orleans, and both of which in turn are way different from the northern LA highlands but they all do Mardis Gras. all the fun zydeco music comes from creole country but the musicians make a lot more money in New Orleans. The other two parts of the state usually conspire to keep New Orleans in its place.

I was in New Orleans last summer, biked around a lot, lot's still unbuilt and ruined. I like it better now than before. Bourbon St. in 2003 was like a continual frat party - it had nothing to do with jazz and everything to do with rock and roll cover bands in every bar. I thought it was kind of gross. Now it is more restrained. We say a really good modern New Orleans style brass jazz and some classic jazz also, although there was plenty of cover rock and roll for those of that persuasion.

and while the Hank Williams Sr song has been covered in zydeco style, i'm really not sure what his connection to the bayou is.
