WTF......I wonder what's the story behind this? Seems reminiscent of the Rodney King beating of 91'

Finger Hash,

It's a disturbing video for sure, and reminds me of the comment that in many cities, the police department is the gang with the best weapons. Mob psychology, anger from the death of a compatriot, and adrenalin from the chase must have overtaken them, because they had to know that news helicopters are always making videos of chases. The thugs they were beating will likely get a sweet deal out of the incident. Strange.

There was no call for that kind of brutality. Recently a uniformed cop was shot dead and the cops have found 2 of the 3 suspects when that had happened. They got the last guy last night, (Eric Floyd). So tensions have been pretty high. These 3 guys in the video jumped out of a car and shot randomly into a crowd and were driving away when they were apprehended.

My guess is that it's kind of gang/mob mentality. Once things got started they just snowballed out of control. The thing I find more abhorrent is that some people actually think that this kind of thing is okay because the cops were stressed, and the guys beaten were criminals. Some people have been decrying fox news for showing the tape. I guess some people just can't wrap their wee little minds around the fact that justice does not equate to vengeance. That cops no matter how stressed must abide by the laws they uphold.

Those 3 guys might have deserved getting a beating but cops simply do not have the right to take the law into their own hands and determine guilt and punishment. I don't buy into the whole, they are stressed argument. If you become a cop and don't think that you might potentially be in dangerous, stressful, life and death situations and you are a retard.

There was a local news article recently. A cop at a convenience store though he saw a drug deal going down and called for back up. As the 2 officers approached the car, one of the persons inside made an abrupt move that alerted the cops. The first cop fired and the second one tazered him.

Now I am not saying the cops shouldn't react if they are in danger, but is it really necessary to tazer a person that has already been shot?

Thanks for the link FH,

I'd heard of this but had yet to see it. I do agree that police should not be vigilantes. However these thugs fired randomly into a crowd. It's easy to look at this from afar and make a judgment. But if one of those bullets had killed a member of your family would you still feel the same way?

It's not right that the taxpayers are gonna take a hit when these filthy criminals file their lawsuits.

I don't want cops thinking they can do whatever they want, but it sounds like these guys really needed an ass whooping. And I don't know who else was gonna do it.

DDT,

The reality is that the police hand out punishment every day in a variety of ways. If they think it'll do some good, they'll smack a guy around, throw him to the ground, put on the handcuffs too tight, cite him for a burnt out taillight, conduct a nuisance search of his car, etc. And it probably makes the world a better place and keeps the courts less crowded than they already are. But the Philly gang-like beatings were over the line.

Would I like to see the police beat up truly bad guys? Sure. The bind is that the police get to decide who the bad guys are. Back in the 60s, I witnessed up close the police clubbing the bloody heads of "bad guys" who were engaging in a sit down protest of the Viet Nam war. A lot of mainstream people hated these protesters and thought "they had it coming". Give the police full latitude to punish bad guys and someday when we express an unpopular political view we may become the bad guy.

wow that brings back memories puff. remember the fire hoses used on the protestors in the deep south? and the students that were taking over administration buildings on college campuses? and the dogs too? wild times

probably one of the positive results of that era was that law enforcemenet vs. people was much defined as to individual rights and "force" by law enforcement. its a shame and totally disgusting this stuff still happens. at the same time i have to admit, if i needed desperate help the first thing i would do is dial 911

I understand your point of view and agree with it for the most part. It's not so much that I agree with what the cops did, although I certainly don't feel sorry for the guys that got stomped, it of course is still unacceptable for police to be judge, jury, and punisher.

But it's just that if these criminals shoot a random bullet into a crowd as these thugs did and it hits you or me than we get nothing. But these thugs get a well deserved ass kicking and because it was by cops caught on tape they get lots of our tax dollars. That just doesn't sit right with me.

I lived in inner city Philly for 25 years. I know just where in N Philly this took place. There is a general distrust of the police, not entirely due to incidents such as this. Poverty causes people to react in this way. This is a horrible place to begin with... thugs gun down people in a drive by shootings, law enforcement as such really is a joke.
The guys had it coming. How many of you have seen a 4 year old in a wheel chair because of assholes who sell crack, dime bags of dope and guns upset over the way somebody looked at them?
Personally, I think the cops should have killed all three of them. The three poor beat up assholes and others like them are ruining society....not the cops. It's as black and white as good vs evil. and Philly Kid...why dont you go back to the suburbs and pull your head outta your ass.

bbq,

"i have to admit, if i needed desperate help the first thing i would do is dial 911"

Damn straight. The majority of cops are decent folk who are offended by the Philly beatings, never would engage in that kind of savagery, and are probably embarrassed and ashamed of the incident.

The Philly beatings represent a failure of leadership. I'm sure there are rogue cops who step over the line, but you don't get this kind of group attitude and behavior without blaming superiors all the way up to the mayor.

Umby,

"Personally, I think the cops should have killed all three of them. "

Too bad the evil assholes didn't pull guns on the cops so they could legally blow them to hell and get the thugs off the streets.

Just because I don't think the cops should be allowed to beat or kill suspects does not mean that I empathize with the criminal element or that I see them as victims. The laws are what they are and simply allowing cops to break the laws that they are sworn to uphold is just inviting trouble. Cops are not all good, there are dirty cops and what's to stop them from taking contract hits and just saying that the person they assassinate was a criminal? Or what's to stop them from beating someone just because they didn't like that person and then later saying that the person was a drug dealer? It's patently stupid to just have blind faith and assume that cops if given absolute authority to do whatever they please on the streets would not ever abuse it.

Civilization requires laws and people who enforce laws should be expected to follow the laws otherwise they are no different than any other gang who beats and kills people they perceive to be a threat. I never said those guys were poor victims or that cops in general are bad. Just because I believe that people should be allowed due process as mandated by the Constitution of the United States of America doesn't mean that I am against cops or that I am shedding tears over those scumbags.

Violence begets violence. If cops are allowed to just beat and kill suspects, perps will be more likely to try to shoot cops rather than be arrested. If my belief that violence is a bad thing even if it's for the purposes of revenge means I have my head up my ass well then I'll just keep it there. What does this beating accomplish? Does it magically bring victims back to life or does it just satisfy some bloodthirsty violent gang mentality that if you hurt one of ours we will hurt you 10 times worse.... a mentality that just continues in a cycle of escalating violence that doesn't serve anyone, least of all the innocent citizens caught in the middle of it.

Increase prison sentences for violent offenders and repeat offenders. Actually try to create an environment for rehabilitation of criminals for criminals who can be rehabbed. Improve the police response time and the police presence in high crime areas. Try to bring in new businesses to areas near the hoods so that people can find work, provide family planning clinics in these areas. If people can't afford food they certainly won't buy condoms and there will be more births into unsuitable households. Pay cops more so that more people will want the job thus making the position more selective. Put money into after school programs so kids have something positive to do rather than run around on the streets. Perhaps we should try some of the above before turning the police force into some state approved gestapo.

hopefully my satire didn't fly over your head.

let cops choose who deserves a beating? what a bad idea. let society decide who
deserves a beating? what a bad idea. let an individual decide who deserves a
beating? what a bad idea.

bad things come when violence is tolerated. violence is against the law.

NOBODY deserves violence. that's what our US LAW SAYS.
