i've taken many, many flights, and i never once got anxious about them, until
i actually became aware of my position in space and time while flying. it's
terrifying. i can't stand the thought of falling from 30,000 feet. dying isn't the
bad part. it's the falling. that feeling, even on a ride, just terrifies me. and to
be conscious of being 30,000 feet in the air, floating on fucking wind and air
propulsion, i get fucking scared...

there's no getting around it. i know the chances are extremely low but it's still
a possibility... and it's not like a no-big-deal possibility, and because it's so
scary, i'm less willing to take the risk.

i want to stop flying but there is just no way.

i'm tried ativan but it wasn't enough. i think xanax would work... 2mg each
way i propose.

i leave monday for a looooong flight :( :( :( :( and i can't get to a doc by then

anyone have any advice? shoot me an email judgenot ,.,.at..,, gmail dot com

I'm afraid Xanax is not going to help you....

Ativan is a lot stronger than Xanax. It's been my experience that most Doctors will prescribe Xanax before Ativan because of this. I also have friends that have deep emotional issues and anxieties (me being one of them) and they have all agreed; Ativan is the stronger benzo when comparing to Xanax.

If you're currently taking Ativan, then I would suspect that you've seen a doctor that prescribed it. My suggestion? Call your doctor and explain the situation. They may agree that a "one" time trial of Xanax to get you through your initial couple of flights may be an option if you feel strongly that it will help until you can see your doc. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take both Ativan and Xanax together. That could equate to a fatal drug cocktail.

Good luck,

AG

bum,

Unless you've take Xanax before, I'd start with a dosage less than 2 mg. That much would put me out for a couple of cross country flights, but I'm sensitive to drugs.

It's curious that you abruptly developed a fear of flying. The internet has to have an abundance of guidance on the subject.

Bon voyage.

it actually makes perfect sense to me. i never thought about flying-- it was just
something i did ya know? then i started thinking... well you know the story as
told above.

i've used xanax before. 1mg gets me drowsy..

i've chcked all the internet stuff. the only thin that will seem to help me is just
not thinking about it.. which works to a degree.

it's just hard to avoid thinking about it on a 13 hr flight with a transfer :/

Have you thought about hypnosis? From what you've described it may be a good choice.

Bum:

Ok, so different approach, if you haven't taken it in a while, (Ativan or Xanax, either way) your tolerance will be down rather than up. I would start out with a low dosage; being drowsy may not be a great thing and it will certainly depend on how long each flight is as to how much you take, (i.e. you don't want to to take 2mg the first time and be asleep on the plane if you have a layover in Atlanta as you may end up in Chicago! J/K!!!)

Depending on body weight, I would start at one of the lower dosages, (.5 mg) and then increase it as you're in the air as you feel you need it. Probably best to do it in .5 mg increments and be patient for it to work. I'm not a Doctor, this is just what worked for me in similar situations. By the time you have taken your second flight, you'll have a better idea of what dosage suits you best.

AG

P.S. As far as Hypnosis is concerned, I've been told that works for a "short" period of time. Although medications can ultimately do the same thing, you might consider it in conjunction with some counseling on what may help on a long term basis to "retrain" your brain so to speak.

Xanax works great for flying and any type of anxiety for that matter. It kicks in after about 20 minutes and smoooooths you right out.

Ativan is different. It doesn't seem to effect the anxiety so much, and is much more subtle.

I took Xanax after I found the lump in my breast to keep me calmed down until we figured out what it was.

When I went through chemo treatments I had Ativan. It calms the part of your brain that has the vomiting reflex and works in synergy with other anti-nausea meds to fool your brain into not throwing up. I suppose it does take the edge off, but each benzos acts differently.

I'm not surprised that you didn't feel the anti anxiety effects of the ativan - I find them to be much more subtle than xanax.

I agree with starting with a .5mg of xanax - I think ativan dosages are higher. You should feel it just fine. The first time I took it I was a mess and just .25 set me right.

I don't like to fly much, I didn't fly for 4 1/2 years after 9/11 and .5mg works for me. If the pilot lets us know that a rough spell is coming up, I'll parchute another .5mg.

This looked like an interesting read.....

http://boards.webmd.com/webx?THDX@@.897a473a!thdchild=.897a473a

Klonopin did absolutely nothing for me (well, at first it did but my tolerance was too strong I guess). Valium usually knocks me out. Ativan, I've had a couple of times and it knocks me CLEAR out. Xanax seems to be a good fit for me for anxiety issues. But again, as the good doc said, each person is different. Trial and error.

That's funny - Klonopin knocks me out. Valium makes me cry.

Brain chemistry - no two are the same ;)

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but just for a second ...

Bum, where are you going? Are you going to be staying in touch or dropping out for a while?

13 hours is a long ways away wherever you're going ... so have a great trip...

I take the Xanaz with me but haven't used it on a flight yet. I usually enjoy myself playing video games that Continental has something I never do at home. I would rather not take Xanaz bec, it messes me up the next day, altho there are times to take it.
