We got started in thinking about the trip because my wife's cousin is in the US Army, stationed near Munich. They've been there for five years, and are leaving in June to come back to the US, so we thought -- if we don't go now, we won't be able to see Europe with them.
They met us in Munich and showed us around the town. I agree with you Sima, I'm not much of a drinker, but I drank a lot more there than I do at home -- sometimes two big beers a day, which is a lot for me. The beer is great.
My cousin insists that Germans drink a lot but don't get too drunk, or at least they are not too obnoxious when drunk. I have my doubts.
We saw a lot of "community policing" in Munich -- that's when maybe 5 or 6 young police officers show up to talk with a bunch of (drunk) young kids. They're not arresting anyone but they are around to keep things cool. Quite different from the US.
We've been away three times this year, and this was the best trip for me -- certainly broadening of my horizons. I'd never been to these cities before, and they were all beautiful, quite different from New England.
While Europe is very expensive, some things are very cheap. In Vienna, you can go to the State Opera house, one of the best in the world, and buy standing room seats for about $3.00! We saw three operas (which doubled the total amount of operas I've ever seen), and that was a lot of fun. Nowadays they have a little electronic translator near every seat and place at the Opera, so you can actually follow the plot of the opera as it goes along. Makes it a lot less boring.
