The Canadian Press

A Victoria-area man has been given a two-year sentence after pleading guilty to operating a mail-order marijuana business that sent packets of pot to people in the U.S. and Europe.

Kendell Arthur Berntson of Langford was charged in the summer of 2007 after the RCMP followed up a tip from American authorities who had intercepted more than 300 mailings from the same sender.

Police said the packages contained one-ounce amounts of marijuana or magic mushrooms, and were mailed to customers who'd placed orders on a website operated by Berntson, who used the handle 'bcbud.'

In April 2007, the Mounties raided Berntson's home and seized 332 grams of marijuana and his computer.

He later pleaded guilty to trafficking and exporting pot and was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in custody, with 10 months credit for time served.

Sorry to hear that. Hope he is hanging in there. Good luck in your time there man, you have been doing God's work for many people.

'American authorities' rot in hell!

If anyone is in contact with BCBUD, I would be interested in sending him any care packages to help his time such as books, foods, anything he might need.

sima,

You're a kind person. Let's hope his time goes easy. It's inhumane and such a waste. Someday it will be different and people will look back on all this as the equivalent of burning witches.

2 years? not bad...had he been caught in the states it'd be more like 15-20! the worst news i see here (besides his sentence of course) is that his computers were seized along with whatever content it contains. i hope he was on top of clearing out any names and addresses that went thru it.
but it's always a sad day when someone who was trying to help those in need gets caught up in the legal net and from everything i heard about the guy, he was very fair and honest with his people and ran his biz the way it should be run. hope he does well during and after his term and if anyone finds out where we can send our support please let me/us know. magazine subscriptions and money for the commissary are always 'most wanted' items and i'd like to help ease his time too...

two years is pretty bad by canadian standards...it must have been severe due to the international trade

under canuck law, i think he's eligible for parole after 1/3 of his sentence, and must be paroled after 2/3 of his sentence...the article doesn't mention asset seizure but it's relatively rare in BC (for simple pot trafficking i think) so hopefully they didn't steal all his stuff

i'm not downplaying his suffering, but most canadian jails are cakewalks compared to US prisons...any sentence two years and under should put him in a relatively reasonable institution
