It was bound to happen. My Harvard educated, 30 years experienced neurologist just retired. So he recommended another doctor to me. I've always been dead honest with all my physicians. So in my patient file, it does indicate that I smoke marijuana due to nausea and lack of appetite.

The new doctor, knowing that fact, recommended Marinol to me. My wife and I were shocked when he did that. We both knew from our research that Marinol is definitely not recommended for patients who suffer from seizures. It exacerbates them and there are even cases of patients going into coma.

Before I could say a word, My wife let him have it. I was so proud of my wife, made me feel very special. I love that woman. Needless to say, we are looking for a very experienced neurologist now. Amazing how doctors put their and pharmaceutical companies interest before the well being of a patient. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

This happens all the time. When I was recently hospitalized I was given a combination of drugs that created a "deadly cocktail." Had I not done my research before taking them, I could have suffered major internal injuries. I read about people taking the same combo coming out with failed kidneys and liver. It is unbelievable how negligent some doctors can be. This is why we as patients must do our own research!

Good luck with finding an experienced neurolgist. I think there might be a doctor shortage out there. I can never get an appointment with my doc and it's always her assistant or something.nn

I guess this is a related story. My sister is paralyzed from the waist down from a flu shot. Since that time of year is just about upon us, dr's never tell you that in rare cases vaccines can cause serious complications or even death. My sister's dr. practically insisted she have a flu shot. She didn't want it. She finally agreed, never had one before. In 3 weeks she was diagnosed with a rare disease called Devic syndrome and paralyzed.Just like that, boom. It was also during the shortage and that was the last shot in the building. Lucky her. This is common enough that the government has a fund set aside for compensation for people like her. You cannot sue for this. People should know. Again,a matter of dr's and drug co's working together for the almighty $ instead of considering patients health and well being. People need to know the facts. Don't get a flu shot!

very sorry to hear this amigo.....you made a good point
did your sis have any medical condition prior to having the shot?
its sad the docs don't even bother reading a patient history before they prescribe meds and stick needles into folks, very sad indeed.....
let your sis know she's in our prayers

peace....

Very sad to read all these posts. The key is to RESEARCH. It is sad commentary that patients perceive their doctors more as businessmen rather than healers.

Hey Mal, pre-existing conditions were diabetes, hypothyroidism, degenerative disc in her back. She was already out on disability. It's really such an unbelievable story. My self and my other sister had moved to NC. This sister and her husband were also moving here. After closing on their house in NY they were on their way down to NC. The halfway point,Maryland, they stopped for the night. In the middle of the night my brother in law had to take her to the emergency room because she had severe pain in her legs. The last time she walked was into that hospital(barely could walk by then). What happened is when she got the flu shot, her body reacted by attacking her spine. The swelling moved up her spine and had it not stopped where it did,she would be on a respirator. Anyway, dr's have already told her the prognosis is for her not to walk again. It's been very hard on the family, and especially her husband because he works his regular full time job, then takes care of her which is a full time job. I could go on about how Medicare won't pay for an aide, etc.,but I've gone on long enough. And this compensation could take up to 2 yrs!

SO so sorry to hear NTL. I have never gotten the flu vax and never will. I'd rather get sick, boost the immune system, and fight off colds the rest of the winter. I haven't heard of that syndrome, but I think there might be other ones too that cause similar side effects.

hey NTL, with a list of pre existing conditions like that,(especially the diabetes) nobody should have given her that shot.... have you considered sueing whoever did? it might help during that 2 year wait?

hang in there!
