War on Junk
Rant N' Roll January 30, 2006

America holds tremendous value for the world, particularly through the ideals which are espoused through the smudged print of its brittle constitution. But I feel great sorrow and anger when I consider that principles such as personal liberty and responsibility are treated as antiquated relics or impediments to "getting the job done", and are harnessed as sound-bite opportunities for political gain in a tainted system. Many of our so-called representatives have sold the interests and civil liberties of the people down the river, as if they were livestock to be traded.

Federalism Should Extend To Marijuana Raids By Radley Balko
CN Source: Politico.com September 11, 2007 Washington, DC
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) recently said that, if elected president, he would end the federal raids on marijuana clinics in states that have legalized the drug for medical purposes. That makes the Democratic field unanimous now all would end the raids and allow the states to craft their own medical marijuana policy, free from federal interference. By contrast, just two of the remaining GOP candidates Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) and Rep. Tom Tancredo (Colo.) and none of the front-runners have promised to call off the raids. continued...

Legislators To Consider Legalizing Hemp By Haley Davies
CN Source: San Francisco Chronicle August 20, 2007 Sacramento, CA
State legislators are expected to consider a measure this week that would allow hemp to be grown in California, rekindling the debate over whether such a move would increase cultivation of illegal marijuana and conflict with federal laws regulating the drug. A committee of the state Senate is scheduled today to review legislation to permit California farmers to grow industrial hemp. The bill - AB684 - would establish a five-year pilot program in several California counties and define "industrial hemp" as separate from "marijuana" under the state's Health and Safety Code.

Late Tuesday night, the California Senate passed a bill that would allow four counties, including Mendocino County, to participate in a pilot program to test the viability of growing industrial hemp in California. Arguments In The Marijuana Debate
CN Source: Denver Post September 18, 2007 Colorado
Marijuana is a "gateway" drug that leads directly to use of harder drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. The short answer is no. Police continue to make the claim, although they now acknowledge that their argument is based on gut feeling and anecdotes. Academic researchers, including RAND, note there is a "correlation" but not a "causation." In other words, many people who use marijuana eventually use other drugs as well. But that's like saying many people who drive blue cars have brown eyes - does one cause the other?

Medicinal & Recreational Peace Opinion
CN Source: ProgressiveU.org September 17, 2007 Michigan
Medical and Recreational Peace, a special interest group in Michigan, is fighting for our right to free choice. The organization got its legislative petition approved and collected signatures to get the proposal on the 2008 state ballot. Here in Michigan, marijuana use can bring unique benefits. Legalization could bring more people to the state as well as boost Michigan's failing economy, which has a record deficit of $900 million. This proposal would make it legal for adults over 18 to use and grow marijuana on private property, with regulations. The use of the drug in public would incur a $50 fine, and a misdemeanor with repeated offenses. Continued...

Marijuana Rally a Big Hit with Supporters By Chelsea Pellissier

A group of teenagers wound through Boston Common. The leader of the posse, a high school junior with blue hair, stopped and said she liked to smoke pot. She then walked away. Keith Saunders, president of the Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition (MassCann) and a Northeastern alumnus and part-time professor at the university, began researching drug policy during his Ph.D program at Northeastern. Morley Safer Reports On Proposition 215 By David Browning

The idea was a noble one: pass a law to make marijuana legal for cancer and AIDS sufferers whose pain and nausea the drug is known to relieve. But the law the Rev. Scott Imler thought would one day put the drug in pharmacies has instead created "pot dealers in storefronts" who sell to anyone with doctors' notes that are fairly easy to obtain.

Ex-Cop is Now Marijuana Advocate
DALLAS COUNTY Friday, September 21, 2007

When it comes to marijuana, Barry Cooper is on the wrong side of the law.
"The war on drugs is a failed policy; it's not working," Cooper says. "This isn't 1957 any longer, it's 2007—and the facts and the evidence show that marijuana should be legal."

Cooper not only believes marijuana should be legal, he's trying to help people grow it—and not get caught.

Collecting of Details on Travelers Documented By Ellen Nakashima
CN Source: Washington Post September 22, 2007 Washington, DC
The U.S. government is collecting electronic records on the travel habits of millions of Americans who fly, drive or take cruises abroad, retaining data on the persons with whom they travel or plan to stay, the personal items they carry during their journeys, and even the books that travelers have carried, according to documents obtained by a group of civil liberties advocates and statements by government officials.

A Fairbanks man whose multimillion-dollar marijuana growing operation was disbanded in the early 1990s is poised to be reimbursed for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property seized by the federal government. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that John Collette did not receive proper notice for items confiscated, including two aircraft, a dump truck, snowmachines, a computer and more than $40,000 from bank accounts, according to court documents.

Baloney on Medical Marijuana
CN Source: Times Herald-Record Editorial September 21, 2007 Albany, NY

There's a trick politicians use when they want to appear to be in favor of some issue that has strong public support. They craft legislation that suggests support but include a provision they know the other political party won't go for.

Senate Republicans are doing just that with medical marijuana. The Assembly approved a bill in June that allows people who are certified as seriously or terminally ill to grow and possess small amounts of marijuana, if recommended by a doctor. Nancy Calhoun of Blooming Grove and Tom Kirwan of Newburgh properly voted for the bill.

The drug helps ease the chronic pain and nausea that accompany many serious illnesses.

Senate Republicans, including John Bonacic and Thomas Morahan, say they, too, support the idea but and here's the poison pill only if the system is controlled by doctors and the state. No "blanket giveaways," as Bonacic put it. The bill would have the state control distribution and, in effect, require a prescription from doctors. The problem is that the federal government labels marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning it can't be prescribed.

Gray Areas: Conflicting Laws Lead To Arrests By Will Bigham
CN Source: Daily Bulletin September 25, 2007 CA
California voters passed Proposition 215 - permitting the medical use of marijuana - more than a decade ago. In some parts of the state, use of the drug is readily accepted by local governments and police departments, with dispensaries and doctors specializing in marijuana openly advertising their businesses.

Transcript: The Debate On California's Pot Shops By David Browning
CN Source: CBS News September 23, 2007 (CBS)
A decade ago, California became the first of a dozen states in the nation to legalize medical marijuana. True believers, including many doctors, say pot works to ease pain or counter the side effects of chemotherapy. And the National Academy of Sciences agrees, if the drug is carefully used. Critics see medical use as the gateway to legalizing all marijuana. Well, how is the California state law working? As correspondent Morley Safer reports, the answer involves another statute: the law of unintended consequences.

829,625 US Marijuana Arrests in 2006, up 15%
Police arrested a record 829,625 persons for marijuana violations in 2006, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report, released today. This is the largest total number of annual arrests for pot ever recorded by the FBI. Marijuana arrests now comprise nearly 44 percent of all drug arrests in the United States. "These numbers belie the myth that police do not target and arrest minor marijuana offenders," said NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre, who noted that at current rates, a marijuana smoker is arrested every 38 seconds in America.

Shoul dn’t the primary concern of any decent society be the well-being of the patients, not the preservation of prohibition?

If 60 Minutes wanted a real story they might have reported on how law enforcement in much of the state still ignores the legal ri ghts of patients, violating state law.

The Drug War Is Politics By Other Means: Blackwater Gets Billions to Fight Narco-Terorism. Buying Constituencies for the Drug War. Analysis by Richard Cowan

I suspect that this report will be largely ignored by the anti-war left, but what is happening here is much more dangerous to our freedom than what is happening in Iraq.

This $15 billion is just one more example of the government buying very powerful constituencies for the Drug War.
