Hey ya'll, trying to get an indoor grow going. My seedlings come up,turn yellow, then die. It's so sad :(
Can you guys tell me what the best type/kind of soil to use(I'm using miracle gro potting mix,no good?(don't laugh) Maybe it's too hot? (got over 100 degrees in my grow space,I have a fan going, I'm using high watt flourescents that are supposed to mimic natural sunlight. I'm getting discouraged. I've gone through about 12 GOOD dutch seeds.
Help!! Peace & Bud

too freaking hot man
for seeds it needs to be around 70/80 degrees F max!

dont use miricle grow potting soil for seeds .. they cant have any fertalizer for
the first few weeks ..just water
just get a good multipurpose compost then add some perlite (looks like
broken polystirene ) you can get it from any garden centre . mix in 20%
perlite to 80% compost ..
if you got a camra take a pic of the grow space and light and fan and post it
on here
then we can sought out your shit ... you got to sought out the heat problem !

George
Thanks for the help! I live in southern U.S.,it's freakin' hot in August. Unfortunately my grow space(attic)doesn't have ventilation(I open the door often to try and give it some) I guess by compost you mean just a general topsoil? I'm using the twirlie type FL's screwed into those dome type aluminum things(I thought be good as reflector),sorry if I'm not explaining it right.Oh! I also have foil surrounding it. Is that just adding to the heat problem? I'm gonna try and get a picture up. I don't know what I can do about the heat, though, not my house so I'm limited as to any modifications, and that's about the only place I can do it. Maybe I have to wait til weather cools off a bit? I'ts just that I'm dry as a bone, don't have a connection here so trying to get my own thing going so I don't have to rely on someone,ya know what I mean?
Thanks again (try to post picture soon)
Have a smoke for me!!

you need to rebuild your grow space asap !

lets start with the basics .any grow space doesnt matter what your growing weed, orkids, tomatoes etc needs 4 main things:

1)Air- Carbon dioxide ( CO2 )
2)Light
3)water-a hydroponic system/soil
4)the growing temperature shouldnt be outside 60/90 degrees F
when you build a grow room in any space ..you need all of these things ..remove 1 and the plants will die!or get very ill then die

you need to construct a new grow room and spend a little cash to get it working

THE CONSTRUCTION

1)THE PLAN : start with a rough idea or a drawn design on paper air in at the bottom , heat rises so hot air out at the top. lights at the top or on chains but in the middle ,and the system/ plant pots and soil right under the light.

thats simple ,now the key to any grow room is the plan . plan for more plants than you need to grow then nothing will go wrong .

2)THE BOX:
construct the box with the idea that 1 plant will use up 1 foot x 1 foot

so if you want the grow 4 plants you need at least 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft) of grow space...thats pritty easy to understand, now with that in mind add half a foot all the way around the edge of the grow space.

now as i dont know the dimensions that you have got to play with you need to tel me what is it ....as tall as possible

i need width x height x depth

then we can get on with the rest.

First let me tell you that George is an excellent source of advice, and can build an inspiring grow cabinet!

Next, regarding living in the South and being "freakin'" hot. Living on the Gulf coast I'm aware of what attic temps can do in August. For some reason it seems like a good place....until those August temps hit and your attic soars to 120F/49C and above. Then your plants get unhappy and die.

The best advice I can offer is to think it out well before starting so as to avoid having to redo/repurchase things.

Hey George! My luck may be turning. Took a chance and took my 2 remaining seedlings out of the "miracle crap" and replanted them in a pot w/some good topsoil w/perlite,compost,etc already in it. Figured they were gonna die anyway so I had nothing to lose. They went thru alot of trauma(had trouble getting them out of 1st pot).Anyway, since yesterday when I did it, the one seedling has GROWN. Overnight! Can you believe it? Oh, also took it out of the hot attic for now. Thanks for helping me, you're the coolest. I'll keep you updated on how things progress. Peace!

why dont you make a growbox in ya room instead , ive done that before, see link :

http://boards.marihemp.com/boards/thd11x17195.shtml

it also means you dont need to go into attic : ), then when you decide to insulate the attic so its not hot yopu can move it back up there...

: ) , glad ya baby is growing but it needs that florecent light 18 hours a day

I took a look at that link. All I can say is you're a mad genius. I think you should go into business making "house calls" and building that for people.
I'm leaving light on 24/7. I want to get this done as quick as possible. Is that the wrong approach? I read so many different things my head is spinning.

no 24/7 is ok : ) , a standard veg time is 18/6 but apparently
weed doesn't need a dark period . so 24/7 can be used .. some think its faster but no tests have been done to prove this .

i use 18/6 coz its cheaper for your electricity consumption

.
i have thought about building grow rooms for people as in turn up ask what they want ask no "questions" and build it with a construction company like "aqua construction" so theres nothing dodgy on the bill lol .

I'm not really thinking about electric cost because I live w/my sister and she's loaded.lol

I meant just building for people that you know and can trust(like smoking buddies) and just accept cash maybe. Besides, that is not illegal is it? Your're just building it, what they do with it is up to them,no? but I guess that could be a little sketchy.

Nice talking with you,it doesn't seem easy to make friends on this site. :]

no building growrooms isnt illegal but with the knowledge that its going to be used for illegal activities is ..

also a "company" that build "hydroponic growrooms" in peoples houses and "attics" is "D O D G Y" .... hydroponic growing is meant for all types of plants but becoz of the film "saving grace",its got a bad name. (killer film though)

and people that have grow opperations try to stop people knowing that they have growrooms ...thats pritty understanding ,so having a company that screams hydroponics will have bad business ...

like with online grow shops always find out what the billing name is ... ive had situations where the company is like cannagrowing on the credit card , or cannabisseedsdirect .. thats not good , then i decided to find out what the billing name was so now its like pg or tlc or lt1ltd

slyness is the key to an illegal activities

Oh yeah, I totally see what you're saying. I'll have to check that movie out, haven't seen it.

My one baby is doing real good. growing like a weed. haha
i gave it a little bit of food today(dilluted)because i read at this stage it needs a lot of nitrogen(hope that was ok,just a little bit),the other looks kinda funky. it has 1 serrated leaf sticking out,i can't even see the round leaves. i kind of helped the seed casing to fall off because i thought it was kind of stuck and holding it back from growing. i'll see what happens.

helping the seed case come off is fine : ) , i do it all the time ... dont give any fertalizer to the seedlings just water for now .... it will kill em lol..

and dont worrie once wont matter just water them water ! you only fert them when they reach about 7-8" or untill they start going lighter at the bottom .

saving grace is a killer film ... a true growers/stoners film ;)

laterz .... that is the most beautiful and awesome thing i have ever seen ,in my life (film snippet .. you'll understand when you see it:)

Great Info, just what I was looking for.

What would a fluorescent light on 18 hours a day 7 days a week cost?

Any tips for growing in a cold climate?

depends on wattage, and how bulbs. honestly i would not use cfl unless for cloning and first 5-7 days of growth.

cold climates are easy to make stable. use an electric heater. try to keep the soil/medium warm. if the soil is warmer than the floral (not above 75) it should keep happy even if air temps drop to low 60's to upper 50's, but i am not a hortoculturalist. I just grow in cold basement, keep things off floor, and maintain a 68f-78f temps at all costs

Run lights at coldest part (usually evenings),. during veg, use cfl 24/7 for best root development.

but cost, around $8.00 a month @ 14 cents per measured kw.

if you grow with the right lights, and have right timing, then you can get by with only $20-25 a month electric, I use $25-30, and have 2 grow rooms (small).

rock on!

you're electric bill will have that info. look for kw/h costs on it and just do the math...it's simple.

don't do only one plant...chances are it'll be a male. plant at least 5 or 6 so you'll have something a little more worthy of your time and expense...plus you'll be wasting a lot of light and space growing only one where a half dozen will fit just as well. 5 or 6 will fit well under a 250W light and they don't cost much and will not effect your elec bill any more that leaving 3 or 4 lights on 18-20 hours/day. i also suggest using the best seeds you can find or buy...the plants will not be better than their parents so getting good stock is a must. there's no sense in wasting your time growing something mediocre just for the experience when you can get the same experience growing top quality.

you can do 1 plant if there feminized seeds ....but do 2+ just for the effort.

a 250watt HPS or MH is fine the MH is probally the best option if your only getting 1 light/2 (cheap florecent from diy store)
