I have accumulated several combo humidity/temperature gauges from walmart. They will measure temp/hum inside or outside. The outside probe can also be dropped into a rez to check water temp. They really work good and are cheap at around $10 to $15 each. Its been several yrs since buying any but they used to be located with the outdoor thermometer section.
If you have an ac running, it will dry up most of the humidity while its running. even with a humidifier installed. Its a problem....keeping things cool draws the RH down too low sometimes, but without the ac, the heat can be a killer.
Could you run the lite when it cooler? like at nite, so you might not need the ac running all the time. That might let some rh build up a bit. Each situation is different, but georges numbers are about right on. If the rh gets too low, the fan leaves will start to roll up from the sides. Thats their means of protection by limiting the leaf area exposed. If the rh is REALLY low the fans will roll up into a cigarette shape and start to get crispy in a few days.
Adding jugs of water in the room might bring the rh up a tad bit, but its not going to solve the problem. Good growin'
