Hello all! I'm just beginning my second grow. First time went well but only yielded about 1.5 oz per plant after about 8 weeks of flowering. I'm growing Bubblegum which seems to be a mostly sativa strain. I'm about 3 weeks into vegetative growth and would like to try increasing my yield this time. I've got the Cannabis Grow Bible which is quite helpful but thought I'd get some advice from those here who may have information more specific to the Bubblegum.

My setup is an attic room approx 7 x 7 and 8 feet in height. I'm using a 400 watt HPS light (I know... not enough wattage for the size of my room, but its what I have). Ventilation is a simple bathroom vent fan which doesn't really keep it cool enough. Temps are often over 100 degrees which killed one of my seedlings straight off but the other is growing well and looking quite healthy.

Which is my best option between pruning, topping and FIM? My book mentions that topping is necessary for max yield in certain strains but not in others. I was hoping that some experienced with various techniques for improving yield could share some advice for a somewhat novice grower. Thanks in advance!!

Go digital. It will reduce your heat.

Then get an oscillating fan or two, and run that bathroom fan more, and you should get your heat down.

Anything over 90 degrees will roast your plants. 100?

Bye bye.

88 is the absolute max you want to hit, and optimal is 80 while lights are ON. 70 when lights are off.

Goodluck with your bbq

Thanks for answering my question... lol!! She's actually doing just fine despite the heat. I run the fan 24/7 btw. Outside weather is cooling off so temps inside my grow are improving. Any advice pertaining to my actual question?

1.5 oz is A LOT per plant for indoors. Not "only".

Anyways, I would never top unless you have height restrictions and exploding plants.

If you want max yield, even though 1.5 oz per plant is huge, you can use low stress training with strings and tie downs.

Make sure the main stalk stays stable and not bent or else it will become weak and eventually break under the plants weight.

1.5 oz p/p, is good to great. I had a girl that in 60 days would produce 3 oz indoors, and 3.25 outdoors, but was 75% sativa and 25% afgan/indica (MUTT - from a seed infested pretenda-kind bag). was a complete nightmare to clone, but she tasted so great, but the high was medium, and she grew 3-4' high.

Try to maximize your space in cooler months, mylar down the area (closed quarters), vent from below and exhaust up and/or out (force air flow out top). I have found that keeping the medium @ +/- 70 f, the grow area can reach in the lower 90's with great circulation, and keep water and airated!

What is the climate type?

get a bigger pot, and fill with cool water to surround the medium, and provide humidity (unless in humid climate like GA, then disregard)

My rule is, if you build your area around the first grow (obviously you grew a mostly sativa (tall) with 7x7 area) and then change to a different breed that grows smaller, then the amount of space needs to be adjusted, but also the needs of the various strains are very very different!
Try building a stand for a box fan and have it pointing up towards the medium, and out the top & give at least a foot of clearance if possible and try to filter the incoming air by strapping cheap furnace filters to it (3pk @ $5). (if possible) put the ballast as far away as possible! if you can place metal on the base under the fan, the air current will actually form a peltier' cooling system. aluminum works great, and a resturuant style flat cooking tray is better. pour water in it every few days, and watch the temps fall by 5+ degrees......

hell grow up to 4 in 4" space to maximize light absorbing, and keep the light 1.5'-2' away from tops, and raise lower as needed. I use plastic adjustable racks w/ 6" variance.

sorry for ramblin, just cracked the jar on my WW, and can hardly think-

good luck with the heat - bubblegum hates it!

Wow, I guess I did better on my first grow than I thought!! I should correct myself and perhaps expand on my original post. My grow was mostly Indica, not Sativa as I previously posted. This was also a different house than I'm currently in. While it was also an attic room, it was about 6 x 6 with a slanted ceiling that was 5 feet at its highest. Temps there were kinda high but not as bad as the current grow. Because of the low height, I tied them over and then let the tops turn back up to the light. It kinda ended up a bastardized Sea of Green or Screen of Green as I got a number of buds close to the top rather than just the top cola from the 2 plants.

I also had 2 mostly Sativa plants that yielded nothing of use. I think I probably didn't give them enough time in flowering as I harvested at 8 weeks along with the mostly Sativa.

I'm in the midSouth where temps have been above the usual this fall. The last week temps are back to normal and its not been so bad in my grow. I have also been leaving the door to my room open for a couple of hours to lower the heat buildup and refresh the air inside. She seems to like the fresh air because she's really started to sprout both up AND out.

Thanks for the good advice. Sounds like topping may not be the best idea, but what do you think about pruning to improve my yield?

As far as clipping your bblgum, I would do some research on it, as there are some indica strains that HATE to be clipped. slows the finish time, and the extra (if any) yld maybe 1-5 grams. also it can stop/stunt growth altogether.

Go to the site that you purchased from, or a site(s) that sells them. send them a question or 2 about clipping BBlgum. or chose 1 plant to experiment with! that is what makes it fun to garden indoors!

Most sativa's i have grown take 9-11 weeks to finish or more. havn 2 rooms is nice, or just have 2+ veg rooms, and just drop them in flwr when they get ready. 1 finish room is all you need.
