Green residue in plant pots.

Some of the cups are developing a green residue on the insides. Does anyone have any information about what it is and what I can do about it? I would greatly appreciate it. As I write I am realizing that roots are supposed to be in the dark, so clear plastic cups are not good for starting plants. Thanks.
