Advice on how to start a small outdoor garden

I just want to get what I can beaing its my firt gro. Wjhats a cheap potting soil? I have been thinking about using the miracle gro, if you think of something better in that same price range let me know. I plan to start them in small pots, and transfer them to bigger pots as they grow. How far away should I move them to prevent pollination, I am debating on saving the males to make hash, but If there is3 or less males I will I would probably just throw them away, or make brownies, can you make brownies from males? Any help woulf be greatly appreciated. Remember though I am on very limited income. Thanks Red
